The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for two-year appointment. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2023.


The position will be in the Exploration Geophysics research group, led by Professor Andrei Swidinsky (https://www.es.utoronto.ca/people/faculty/andrei-swidinsky/). The project involves the development of machine learning tools for mineral exploration, with a particular focus on the analysis of geophysical data.


The successful applicant will be expected to independently carry out geophysical research projects including formulating problems, developing machine learning algorithms, identifying/compiling/working with exploration data from industry & government sources, and writing reports, papers and proposals.


Responsibilities will include:

  • designing, planning and executing research projects;
  • interfacing with mining industry and governmental partners;
  • working with multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional teams;
  • coordinating with other project leaders, PIs and collaborators;
  • data analysis and reporting;
  • ability to work with and train students and trainees;
  • effective communication in English and assistance in preparation of scientific manuscripts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education:

  • PhD in geophysics

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral experience in geophysics, mineral exploration or related resource exploration problems
  • 2 years experience working with supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods
  • Demonstrated experience with mineral exploration technologies
  • Demonstrated experience in grant writing and fund raising, publishing, attending conferences & presenting results, and project management

Skills:

  • Strong computational skills are required


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Due to the academic and large-scale nature of the project, demonstrated experience in publishing, attending conferences and presenting results, project management and working with industry would be a strong asset.
