Description:

Research Associate position in the area of metabolic engineering, systems microbiology, enzyme screening and engineering is available at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, University of Toronto. This position is a part of collaborative research project within BioZone at U Toronto.


Duties:


  • Conceive hypothesis, design experimental plans and conduct experiments and analyze and interpret data

  • Review scientific literature; Execute research projects and report on their progress through oral and written reports and scientific journal articles

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing

  • Present research at local, national and international meetings and conferences

  • Contribute to publication of academic papers and technical reports

  • Liaise with industry partners and vendors effectively to support research goals

  • Coordinate research projects and meetings as appropriate

  • Responsible for implementing synthetic biology protocols for deletion of genes in various hosts such as Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Acidithiobacillus species

  • Develop strain inventory database

  • Perform enzyme assays

  • Characterize microbial physiology

  • Train new students on these research related experimental skills and maintain a lab manual.

  • Perform other additional duties to enable the safe and efficient operation of the lab for the research project


Qualifications
:


The position requires a Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant scientific field. Minimum 1 year of experience in metabolic engineering, pathway optimization involving non-natural enzymes, genetic engineering, metabolic modeling, flux analysis, optimization and biochemistry are encouraged to apply for this interdisciplinary project involving active collaboration with microbiologists, biochemists and engineers.


Preference given to candidates with experience with:


  • Yeast physiology (un-conventional yeast experience an asset)

  • State-of-the-art genome editing methods

  • High throughput gene assembly

  • Microbiological methods

  • Metabolic modelling

  • Experience with strain/enzyme rational or random evolution principles is a an asset


Notes:

This is a 12-month term position with the possibility of renewal.
