Responsibilities

Mikisew Cree First Nation is looking for a qualified Mental Health Registered Nurse to join the team, the successful candidate will provide Mental Health services to clients and is responsible for assessment, nurse diagnosis, development and implementation of care plans. The Mental Health Nurse will provide counselling to clients on as needed basis.

The Mental Health Nurse will work collaboratively with Director of Health and other stakeholders to ensure proper care is provided to clients in addition to the following responsibilities:

  • Provide nursing assessments and plans of care for clients, including medication administration.
  • Practice in accordance to the code of ethics and practice standards of their specific professional college.
  • Maintain client health records in a complete and timely way.
  • Providing supportive counselling that is evidence based and corresponds with professional best practices such as cognitive Behavioral therapy, Solution Focused therapy, Strengths Perspectives, and Motivational therapy.
  • Providing support and health education for members, their support networks and other associated with their care.
  • Provide brief intervention to clients in acute distress and ensure the client has full access to internal and external health care services.
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications

  • 5 years of relevant experience in Psychiatric Nursing, Registered Nursing, Mental Health Nurse preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing from recognized University or College.
  • Level C First Aid Training,
  • Working experience managing multiple appointments.
  • Proven experience in building working relationships with First Nations communities and partners.

Other Requirements

  • Possess valid Class 5 AB driver’s license and own or access to a vehicle.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to Fort Chipewyan as required.
  • Willingness and ability to work after hours and/or weekends when required.
  • Willingness to submit to oath of confidentiality.
  • Willing to work flexible schedule. Combination of in-office and at community locations.
  • Must provide and possess a clear criminal record vulnerable sector check.
  • Ability to speak and/or understand the Cree language (or another applicable First Nation language) would be beneficial.
