Role Summary:

The Recreation Coordinator role at The Safehaven Project for Community Living (Safehaven) provides a range of and administrative duties that may include advocacy for funding sources, community outreach, consultation, and recreation program implementation.

The individual in this role is accountable for the development of recreational activities and programming across the six (6) Safehaven locations acting as a support to the frontline staff, supervisors, clients and families for residential and respite clients and families.

Responsibilities:

1. Recreation:

  • Plan, lead and organize, recreation and leisure activities for clients, including, but not limited to Games, Play, Baking, Arts & Crafts, and Community Outings
  • Accompanies clients to therapeutic and recreational appointments as requested by the Client Care Coordinator/designate;
  • Provides on-site direction and general guidance, education or training of equipment if needed.
  • Collaborate with the recreation leads at the Safehaven sites to identify and support the development of recreation of and activities at the locations and in the community
  • Provide recommendations for future recreation programs
  • Ensure that the program materials and equipment is replenished across all Safehaven sites and meets health and Safety standards
  • Performs administrative tasks to support the program, including collaborating with members of the leadership team to assist with the purchase of program supplies.
  • Liaises with caregivers and responds to inquiries.
  • Follow organizational policies and procedures, standards and practices set out by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS)
  • Responds respectfully and effectively to people of all cultures, classes, races, ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation and faiths and religions in a manner that recognizes, affirms and values the worth of individuals, families and communities;
  • Upholds a high standard of proper conduct and professionalism that meets Safehaven’s values and principles.
  • Participates in meetings and training sessions as needed. · Completes required documentation and reports and keep confidential case records for each client in care;
  • Follows all Health and Safety policies that are set out at Safehaven;
  • Shall report hazards to the location Supervisor/Client Care Coordinator that the employee observes;
  • Any other duties as assigned.

2. Community Outreach:

  • Participates in the planning, evaluation and implementation of community outreach activities through the development of collaborative partnerships with other services such as schools, community organizations and other stakeholders that enhance the recreation programming at Safehaven
  • Organizes and participates in educational seminars, workshops, and training for clients, family/guardians, service providers, and employees where interest and ability exist;

3. Other:

  • Respond respectfully and effectively to people of all cultures, classes, races, ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation and faiths and religions in a manner that recognizes, affirms and values the worth of individuals, families and communities;
  • Follows Health and Safety policies that are set out at Safehaven;
  • Demonstrates a positive “health and safety” attitude;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Post-Secondary Education or continuously enrolled in one or more of the following: Early Childhood Educators – Registered ECE, Ontario College of Teacher, Child and Youth, Social Worker, Recreation and Leisure, Psychology, Sociology or Kinesiology
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Standard First Aid – CPR C Certification including infant and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation as recognized by WSIB.
  • At least three (3) years relevant work experience;
  • Proficiency and working knowledge in Microsoft Office programs (excel, Powerpoint, TEAMS), Zoom, viso and other computer relate skills
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills;
  • Experience working with clients who have developmental disabilities and or medical complexities (preferred)
  • Thorough knowledge of social work, including group work, community organization, consultation, education, and research;
  • Thorough knowledge of the scope and activities of local and private health and welfare agencies and community organizations;
  • Ability to maintain records, prepare reports, and compose correspondence.
  • This position is onsite and will require the successful candidate to rotate across the Safehaven locations as needed.
  • Access to a reliable vehicle or ability to find own transportation to other Safehaven sites.
