At the Shell Aerocentre you will find a very dynamic work environment, with an ever-changing demand. At an FBO such as the Shell Aerocentre, a ramp agent can expect to handle all types of aircraft including, small piston aircraft, helicopters, private/business jets, commercial airliners and freighters, government aircraft, and some of the largest aircraft in the world.

Aircraft Ground Handling:

  • Baggage/Freight Handling – The loading and unloading of chartered aircraft, with a heavy manual handling component at times. For this reason, an applicant must be physically fit to lift up to 75lbs continuously.
  • Operation of Ground Service Equipment (GSE) – The operation of various GSE including baggage and towing tractors, lavatory/potable water service equipment, belt-loaders, split-deck loaders, towable ground power and air conditioning units, portable staircases, baggage carts, snow removal equipment, etc.
  • Aircraft Towing & r& Parking – The use of towing tractors and aircraft specific tow-bars to reposition aircraft from apron to hangar, apron to apron, maintenance purposes, departures, and some arrivals.
  • Aircraft Marshaling & r& Apron Movement – Parking/maneuvering planning and execution, understanding aircraft dimensions, active marshaling, and communication.
  • Communication – The use of handheld radios to communicate with other employees on shift.

Customer Service:

  • Passengers/Aircrew – Line Techs are often the first individual a passenger will see upon arrival, and the last individual prior to departure. For this reason, good people skills and a pleasant demeanor are a requirement.
  • Hangar Tenants – The ability to plan and communicate with hangar tenants in a proactive and constructive manner.
  • Communication – The effective receipt and relay of customer/tenant requirements through the use of company telephones, air-to-ground radios, and email.

Schedule Types:

  • Shift Work – As a 24/7 business, all ramp agents are scheduled in various types of shifts. Shifts range from early mornings to afternoons, to overnight shifts. Currently hiring for 12hr shifts on a 2-2-3 schedule.
  • Team Work – During busier periods, a ramp agent must be able to work well with their coworkers to build and execute plans as a team. Strong communication and improvisational skills are required during these times.
  • Lone Work – At times a ramp agent may be working primarily on their own. For this reason they must be self-motivated and able to complete tasks, make decisions, and improvise independently.

Related Skills/Experience:

  • Manual Labor – Physical fitness to lift, carry, stack, pull, and drag objects up to 75lbs continuously
  • Technological Aptitude – Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Android
  • Experience working with aircraft – Ground Handling
  • Customer Service – Experience working with VIP customers

House Keeping:

Ramp Agents are expected to complete various types of housekeeping related tasks. These tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Hangar cleaning (floors, windows, etc.)
  • Office maintenance
  • Some landscaping
  • Snow removal

Related non-aviation specific Experience:

As aviation is a fairly niche industry, some examples of industries that may provide a similar dynamic of experience could be:

  • Restaurant/Kitchen Work (slow periods with unpredictable rush periods)
  • Military/First Response (ever changing work environment, quick thinking)
  • Transportation/Shipping (driving and safe operation of motor vehicles)

Candidacy Assets:

  • At least one year of experience in aviation, specifically in ground handling
  • Transport Canada Security Clearance or RAIC (Red Pass)
  • Edmonton International Airport Airside Vehicle Operators Permit (AVOP D/A, or D)
  • Radio Operator’s Certificate
  • First Aid, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), WHMIS certificates
  • A genuine interest in Aircraft and Airport Operations

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
