Tri-County Regional Centre for Education


The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) encompasses the three (3) Counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving approximately 6100 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

Position: Principal


Reports to: Director of Programs and Student Services


Location: Clark's Harbour Elementary School - Grades Pre-Primary to 5


The principal of a public school is the educational leader of the school and has overall responsibility for the school, including teachers and other staff.


Qualifications

Either

a) A Master’s Degree in Education, preferably with an administrative component; OR

b) Be actively enrolled in a Master’s Program, preferably with an administrative component and have completed at least two (2) courses towards that degree; OR

c) An Administrative Block Program; OR

d) Completed Nova Scotia Instructional Leadership Academy Program (NSELC); OR

e) in the judgment of the Regional Centre, have formal qualifications, including a minimum of an undergraduate degree in education and specific training/experience directly related to the vacant position.


  • Should have a minimum of five (5) years teaching experience;

  • Superior administrative skills;

  • A commitment to establishing partnerships with all relevant community groups;

  • Proven to be a collegial decision-maker with a demonstrated ability to be decisive and consistent;

  • Superior skills in strategic planning and implementation of instructional programs;

  • Knowledge of, and commitment to , quality inclusive education for all students;

  • Superior ability to stimulate professional growth of staff, through effective professional development programs;

  • Demonstrated commitment to and above average knowledge and abilities in the areas of curriculum and curriculum development, implementation and evaluation;

  • Superior interpersonal and communications skills;

  • Superior skills in facilities management, record keeping, financial management and in the supervision of teaching and other staff;

  • Superior skills in the use of current technology as a tool in education;

  • Awareness of and sensitivity to cultural diversity and cross cultural understanding;

  • Proven ability to communicate and work alongside diverse cultural and racial backgrounds;

  • Demonstrated ability to value the voice and contribution of others while remaining open to corrective criticism;

  • Advocacy of firm, clear and consistent discipline practice;

  • Completion of WHMIS and First Aid, or willingness to obtain upon hire;

  • Demonstrated ability to discharge the duties of a principal as set out in Section 38 of the Education At.


Experience

  • 2 Years Administrative Experience (preferably at similar grade levels)

  • 5 Years Teaching Experience (preferably at similar grade levels)


Accountabilities

It is the duty of a principal to:


  • Ensure that the public school program and curricula are implemented;

  • Keep attendance records respecting every student enrolled at the school and report thereon to the regional centre, as required by the regional centre;

  • Take all reasonable steps to secure full and regular attendance at school of the students enrolled in the school in accordance with policies established by the regional centre;

  • Communicate regularly with the parents of the students;

  • Ensure that reasonable steps are taken to create and maintain a safe, orderly, positive and effective learning environment;

  • Ensure that provincial and regional centre policies are followed;

  • Identify the staffing needs of the school;

  • Assist the region with the selection of staff for the school;

  • Evaluate the performance of teachers and other staff of the school;

  • Assist the regional centre in the development and implementation of professional development programs;

  • Encourage teachers and other staff of the school, students and parents to participate in school decision-making through representation on school advisory councils and committees;

  • Participate in the establishment and operation of a school council;

  • Assist the school advisory council in the development of school improvement plans and, upon approval by the regional centre, co-ordinate their implementation;

  • Assist the school advisory council in the preparation of its annual report;

  • Account to the regional centre for money received from the regional centre or any other source;

  • Account to the regional centre, through the Regional Executive Director, for the performance of the school;

  • Adhere to Occupational Health & Safety Regulations as directed by the regional centre;

  • Co-operate with the staff of other departments and agencies of the Government to better meet the needs of the students in the school; and

  • Perform such other duties as are prescribed by this Act or the regulations or assigned by the Regional Executive Director.
