The employee will be expected to perform all functions of the positions remotely but report to a manager who might be working in another location.

Work environment

The role of the NUCHN04 Practice Advisor-Public Health with FNIHB OR includes, but is not limited to:

  • Providing technical direction in public health program areas by supporting Community Health Nurses to address public health program needs for FNIHB, First Nation communities and organizations
  • Promoting population health assessments, community participation and community development approaches to support the implementation of evidence informed public health nursing practices in First Nation communities.
  • Supporting and assisting FNIHB nursing and Band employed nursing staff in collaboration with the public health team in developing, implementing and evaluating public health programs and provides/accesses expert second level advice.
  • Collaborating, establishing and maintaining working relationships with both internal (for example, nurses, community based programs, environmental health officers) and external health care professionals and community service providers, First Nations communities and organizations, provincial and other federal departments.
  • Maintaining effective communication and achieving better integration of FNIHB program activities with Ontario’s local and provincial public health system around public health protocols and activities.

EDUCATION
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution* with acceptable specialization in nursing, nursing service administration, nursing education or some other specialty relevant to the position.

  • Recognized post-secondary institution: Public or private institution that has been given authority to grant degrees, diplomas, and other credentials by a public or private act of a provincial/territorial legislature or through a government-mandated quality assurance mechanism. For greater certainty, also included are institutions authorized to grant specific academic credentials for specific academic programs.

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATE
Eligibility for registration as a registered nurse in a province or territory of Canada.

EXPERIENCE
EXP 1 - Recent* and Significant** experience in providing Public Health Nursing in two or more of the following areas:

1. Case and contact management of Tuberculosis
2. Case and contact management of Vaccine Preventable Diseases and Delivery of Immunizations
3. Case and contact management of Sexually Transmitted/Blood Borne Infections including HCV
4. Case and contact management of Communicable Disease Emergencies
5. Infection Prevention and Control in the following areas: Primary care Nursing setting; OR Public Health/ Community Health Nursing

Recent* is defined as within the last three (3) years

Significant** is defined as at least one (1) years’ cumulative experience with performing complex activities related to these tasks in a wide variety of situations.

EXP 2 - Experience in mentoring (preceptoring) adult learners.

EXP 3 - Experience providing nursing advice and consultation.

EXP 1 - Experience as a Community Health Nurse providing health care services to Indigenous people in remote/isolated and non-remote Indigenous communities

EXP 2 - Experience working in communicable disease management at a local, provincial, or federal level.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Willingness and ability to work overtime, as required

Willingness and ability to travel in small aircraft, off road vehicles and by boat in varied weather conditions to communities in remote and isolated areas, as required.

Valid driver's licence or personal mobility to a degree normally associated with the possession of a driver's license.
