Join the BC Parks Team as a summer Student Ranger Crew Lead

On November 1, 2021 the BC Public Service announced the COVID-19 Vaccination Policy that defines the conditions and expectations for BC Public Service employees regarding vaccination against COVID-19. Among other possible measures, proof of vaccination will be required. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy / BC Parks has created the BC Parks Student Ranger Program to promote outdoor youth employment opportunities across the province.

For the 2023 season, the BC Parks Student Ranger Program will see students employed in BC Parks across the province from May to August. Eligible candidates for the 2023 season are Canadian Citizens, between the ages of 18 and 30, that have been enrolled in full-time studies (secondary or post secondary) within the last 6-months. Crew Lead applicants for the 2023 season, will further be required to have a class 5 drivers license (or equivalent) and demonstrate experience leading a group of 2 or more people to accomplish a task or project during an academic, work, community, Nation or volunteer-based experience. BC Parks encourages students from Indigenous backgrounds to apply for these positions.

Due to recall rights of 2022 Crew Leads, not all positions will be available in the 2023 season. An eligibility list may be made for all of the locations and therefore interested applicants are encouraged to apply on all locations they would like to be considered for.

What to expect:

Being a Student Ranger is a great opportunity to work outside for the summer, learn new skills, meet new people and be engaged in rewarding work. Being a Student Ranger provides youth with an opportunity to live and work in beautiful places of British Columbia.

Each crew will consist of 1 Crew Lead and 3 Crew Members. Each regional crew will work within their respective region on various BC Parks related projects. Crew Lead positions begin May 1, 2023 and run until August 26, 2023. All successful applicants will be expected to attend Program Training from May 14 - 19, 2023. Details on this training will be provided at the offer of employment.

The job can be physically challenging at times, but the result of a crew’s hard work can be extremely rewarding. Crew Leads and Crew Members can expect to be out in the field nearly all working days, participating in various projects in the areas of Conservation, Recreation, Indigenous Relations and/or Public Outreach where possible.

Crew Leads will begin their positions 2 weeks prior to Crew Members at their designated office location and end 1 week after. This time will be for Crew Leads to familiarize themselves with their direct Supervisor and other BC Parks staff, regional BC Park and Protected Areas, and crew projects that they will be leading over the season. During the season, Crew Leads will act as the main point of contact between the crew and other BC Parks staff involved in project work. Crew Leads will also be responsible for program deliverables (ex. bi-weekly crew updates, a final season report, and tracking crew inventory).

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
BC Parks has the following criteria for those interested in becoming Student Ranger Crew Leads for the 2023 season:

• Enrolled in full-time studies at an accredited secondary or post-secondary institution within the past 6-months;
• Experience leading a group of 2 or more to complete a project or task during an academic, work, community, Nation or volunteer experience. Preference may be given to candidates who have experience leading projects or tasks in the outdoors and/or involve a component of safety planning.
• Between 18 - 30 years of age;
• Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada;
• Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations;
• This position requires you to have a valid FULL BC driver’s license (minimum class 5), or an equivalent class driver's license from another province or jurisdiction.
• Must attend Program Training May 14 to May 19, 2023 at Manning Provincial Park near Hope, BC. Details on this training will be provided at the offer of employment;
• Previous Student Ranger Crew Leads and Crew Members can apply for these 2023 Crew Lead positions; and
• Successful completion of security screening requirements of the BC Public Service, which may include a criminal records check, and/or Criminal Records Review Act [CRRA] check, and/or enhanced security screening checks as required by the ministry.
