The role is to safely transit vessels through our network. Becoming an Operations Controller doesn’t require any prior experience or specialized training – all training is provided by the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation – but you must meet the following requirements prior to applying:
  • University Degree or College Diploma
  • Ability to work 12-hour rotating shifts.

Operations Controllers perform a critical role in our organization and assist with the passage of vessels by remotely operating locks and bridges, controlling vessel traffic and performing some manual ship tie-ups. Our recruitment, screening and training processes are thorough and designed to help us hire the best possible candidates. In fact, the duration of the training is approximately 19-24 months of full-time work.

Role

The Controller - Operations Centre is responsible for monitoring and controlling vessel traffic and remote operation of structures, in order to ensure the safety and optimum utilization of canals and structures.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute transit activities according to vessel requirements and operational strategies, including: scheduling vessel traffic, communication with ships and internal personnel, resource deployment, controlling vessel traffic in a defined sector of the Seaway system.
  • Remotely operate structures such as: locks, bridges & weirs.
  • Coordinate locking activities and determine entry manoeuvre for vessels.
  • Monitor and regulate water levels and flow for safe passage of vessels, while maximizing the volume of water for power generation.
  • Initiate response to accidents, incidents and pollution & assist emergency agencies as required.
  • Record and maintain transit data in electronic systems.
  • Perform all activities related to security of the operational facilities, in compliance with the applicable security requirements.
  • Apply safe work methods in compliance with corporate safety programs and applicable legislation.
  • Participate in the mooring of vessels as required.

  • 3-5 years of experience in a detail oriented position
  • Experience working shift work

Education

  • University degree or College diploma

Certifications

  • Completion Operations Controller training program
  • Valid Class G (ON) or Class 5 (QC) driver's license and insurable driving record
  • Radio Restricted Operators Certificate (Maritime)
Hours of work : 40 per week
Salary range: $28.64 - $43.74 per hour
