Urban Academy is seeking innovative, future-focused teachers and leaders. We are a rapidly growing independent school in New Westminster located in a beautiful new facility across the street from Braid Street Skytrain Station. Urban Academy is currently inviting dedicated, team-oriented teachers and future leaders to apply for our Middle School Teacher position for the 2023-2024 school year. The focus in this role is the Humanities (Social Studies and English Language Arts) while infusing an interdisciplinary approach.

Faculty are required to support the school’s co-curricular program. The co-curricular program includes recreational athletics, competitive athletics, and academic clubs. Faculty are expected to attend collaborative staff meetings and to serve on committees, if required.

Responsibilities will include:

● Dedicated to include diverse voices and perspectives in planning and delivery of learning experiences, including Indigenous, local, and global world views

● Following the school’s transdisciplinary approach in planning thematic units of inquiry
● Demonstrating commitment to incorporating real-world connections, and 21st century skills
● Collaborating with colleagues to align planning, instruction, and assessment.
● Utilizing outcome-based assessment and instruction as well as strong formative and summative assessment strategies.
● Building a strong rapport with students and supporting the students’ social and emotional development
● Communicating regularly with students, parents, and other stakeholders about student needs and growth
● Making relevant and innovative use of multiple technologies in the classroom, to enhance teaching and learning
● Participating actively in professional development opportunities and training programs.

All applicants must possess:

● Post-secondary degree in the area of Education.

● Valid BC Teaching Certificate, or maintain the ability to obtain one.
● Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience
● Knowledge of Grade 6 - 8 subjects’ curriculum and ministry requirements for teaching particularly English, Social Studies, Math, and Science
● Current on pedagogical trends through continued reading and relevant recent professional development.
● Strong classroom management abilities.
● Excellent written and oral communication skills.
● Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
● Collaboration and interpersonal skills, with a particular emphasis on collaborative planning and assessment.
● Superior knowledge of curriculum and teaching and learning, specifically when planning educational strategies.
● Strong commitment to student learning and success; being able to understand the needs of students while engaging them as active learners in the classroom.
● Superior EQ skills in self-awareness, self-management, social agility, impact and influence.
● Energy and dynamism to work in a highly focused environment with students keen to succeed.
