Polar Sapphire Ltd. is a manufacturer of high purity aluminum oxide powder (alumina) with a factory located in Oakville, Ontario, Canada.

We combine hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy to perform purification at a lower temperature and with less power, thereby reducing costs and improving the consistency of our product’s purity.

The Role:

The Instrumentation and Electrical engineer provides technical expertise on matters of electrical and instrumentation design, improvement, and maintenance as they relate to process control, electrical, and instrumentation equipment. This role is critical as we start to scale up our new production facility in Oakville.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide Instrument & Electrical subject matter expertise to the engineering, maintenance, operations, electrical contractors, and technical personnel necessary to maintain a safe operating plant.

· Investigate and troubleshoot all electrical, instrumentation, and PLC programming failures.

· Generate and update control and electrical documents including wiring and ladder logic diagrams, cable list, instrument index, cause and effect, I/O list, and control narratives for the existing facility and future projects.

  • Develop typical electrical engineering and design drawings such as single line diagrams; power, lighting, grounding, and other systems plans; electrical area classification plans; P&ID; electrical equipment arrangement plans; cable tray layout plans and sections; conduit and cable schedules; motor control schematics.
  • Design and specify electrical equipment such as motors, breakers, relays, VFDs, and other industrial electrical equipment.
  • Recommend and specify instrumentation for various process measurement applications such as flow, pressure, temperature, and level elements and transmitters.
  • Supervise contractors, electricians, and maintenance workers in testing, tuning, and adjusting equipment to obtain optimum operating performance.
  • Participate in process safety management program, including MOC hazard studies, process hazard analyses, pre-start-up safety reviews, and HAZOP meetings.

PREPARATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of a BS in Electrical Engineering. (P.Eng. designation would be preferred)
  • At least 7 years experience as an Instrumentation and Electrical Engineer in chemical or similar industries.

PERSONAL SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Must be able to lead and supervise others
  • Excellent communication, drive, and decision-making skills
  • Familiar with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Must be familiar with electrical codes and standards in Canada
  • PLC programming knowledge would be preferred
  • AutoCAD or TurboCAD drafting skills would be preferred
