Victoria Women’s Transition House (VWTH) is looking for a Housing Support Worker to join our growing team.


We are a non-profit charity, providing emergency shelter, counselling and support services for women of all ages, with or without children, fleeing from intimate partner violence and abuse. We are a vibrant, collaborative community looking for exceptional people to help us grow as we work towards our mission of ending intimate partner violence.


Details of the Position:

The Housing Support Worker provides referrals, support and guidance to residents and crisis line callers. Assists and supports clients to identify and understand the issues of abuse in their relationship in relation to navigating housing. This position is responsible for the implementation and ongoing service delivery of our housing support program. Some of the key responsibilities include:

  • screening prospective clients for suitability
  • assesses needs & risks and orients clients to services and supports available
  • providing emotional support and assesses clients' immediate needs; assists clients to define and implement an action plan for securing housing
  • plans, prepares and conducts short term group or individual counselling sessions or support group relating to securing housing
  • advocacy and liaising support
  • maintains accurate client records

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's Degree in social work or a related field in human services and a minimum of one year recent related work in similar environment is required (or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience). Direct program delivery experience in the community social services sector with a demonstrated working knowledge of community-based programs. The successful candidate will excellent have:

  • Well-developed interpersonal, counselling, oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organization, time and general management skills
  • Knowledge of group process and facilitation techniques
  • The ability to work effectively with other program staff, therapists, social workers, and other related personnel.

This position supports an essential service working with direct client contact and requires union membership, satisfactory completion of a criminal records search, a class 5 drivers's license and drivers abstract, TB test and Standard First Aid Certificate.


Wage and Benefits:

This is a union position and starts at $28.32 per hour with 3 weeks vacation, paid time off, an excellent benefits package and enrollment in the Municipal Pension Plan.
