    Full time permanent position for Guidance Counsellor. Shared position with Amos Comenius and St. Peter's School. Duties to commence September 5, 2023.

    As Guidance Counsellor, you will be a part of the school-based service delivery team and be responsible for the development of an annual comprehensive school guidance program which outlines the implementation of interventions that promote the holistic development of students.

    Reporting to the Principal, you will provide leadership to school staff, service to students, implement assessments, and participate in response planning for possible critical incidents/traumatic events. As part of the school’s service delivery team you will further the aims and objectives of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District and support improved educational opportunities through program support.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Knowledge of proactive measures in creating a safe, caring, and inclusive learning environment
    • Demonstrated experiences in individual and group counselling
    • Extensive understanding of the assessment process and its implications for student learning and adherence to the comprehensive assessment guidelines established by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development
    • Understanding of and the ability to implement comprehensive assessments which may include formal assessment of achievement and cognitive ability (Level A, B, and C Assessments)
    • Knowledge of information contained in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) pertinent to students served
    • Strong understanding of the diversity of human growth, development, behavior and learning, and the promotion of the holistic development of students
    • Extensive and demonstrated knowledge of child development and knowledge of the diverse learning needs of students
    • A thorough understanding of the ethical requirements in providing a comprehensive school guidance program
    • Demonstrated experiences utilizing data and resources to support student and school community needs
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with stakeholder groups that support the comprehensive school guidance program
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and collaboration with students and parents/ guardians in decision making
    • Success in fostering partnerships, conflict mediation and resolution, facilitation, collaboration and consultation
    • Strong team-building, time management, analytical and problem solving skills
    • Strong understanding of legislation related to child protection, children, and youth
    • Understanding of the process of career development for students from K-12
    • Understanding of the education system and supports the learning and development of students
    • Commitment to ongoing professional learning to inform personal practice

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor of Education
    • Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology including courses in psychological assessments.
    • Training in Crisis Intervention and Co-operative Discipline Techniques.
    • This position may require the use of a personal vehicle and require travel.

    Due to the remote location, the successful applicant is eligible for:

    • Annual Salary Scale contained within the NLTA Provincial Collective Agreement and benefits contained within the agreement.

    • A one-time $5000 signing bonus stipend for non permanent applicants to be paid in two installments ($2000 in December 2023, $3000 in June 2024).

    • A one time claim for travel in and out of the community to their home location, if applicable.

    • A subsidized district housing unit may be available in the community for the successful applicant.

    Additional benefits for positions in which the teacher resides in a Labrador community include:

    • Labrador Benefits - Labrador and Travel Allowances (details in “Working with the District Presentation” below)

    • Coastal Labrador Supplement - For teachers residing in certain coastal communities only. The value of this supplement is $5,000 (prorated depending on start of position), payable in two installments (December and June). To be eligible for this supplement, teachers must be on a full-time continuing contract and must reside in the community for the duration of the contract period. Locations for Coastal Labrador Supplement include Nain; Hopedale; Makkovik; Postville; Rigolet; Black Tickle; Cartwright; Charlottetown; Mary’s Harbour; Pinsent’s Arm; Port Hope Simpson; St. Lewis; Mud Lake
