The Position:
The Gateway Newcomer Planner works with a dynamic, interdisciplinary team dedicated to empowering newcomers through their settlement journey.

Reporting to the Team Lead, the primary role of the Gateway Planner is to support newcomers in their settlement journey, empowering clients to reach their dreams and goals in Canada. This is done through developing personalized plans, conducting comprehensive needs assessments, providing tailored referrals, and holding orientation sessions and educational workshops, in addition to providing support for a range of newcomer settlement challenges while offering the necessary first language interpretation /translation services.

ISC is part way through an exciting organizational and sector-wide transformation. The Gateway Planner’s success will be pivotal in the effectiveness of this transformation.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Client-Centered Services
  • Serve newcomers to Canada, both virtually & in-person, in a positive, culturally sensitive, and constructive manner through the settlement process;
  • Assist clients in identifying and assessing needs and assets, developing a personalized plan, and referring clients to appropriate programs and services;
  • Provide practical and accessible up-to-date settlement information (e.g. housing, schooling, employment, childcare, health care etc.) to clients;
  • Support clients in overcoming barriers to settlement and accelerating the integration process through providing supportive counseling;
  • Follow up on client’s progress and integration into the community, and advocate for clients when required;
  • Develop, coordinate, and report on group orientations/workshops for newcomers in consultation with Gateway Team and Lead, on a monthly basis.
Community Outreach
  • Liaise with community members and agencies, promoting Gateway services, while facilitating client access to these agencies;
  • Perform ongoing outreach activities to various ethno-cultural/community groups (e.g. Social media groups, community centers, places of worship etc.) to increase newcomer clientele;
  • Work out of satellite offices within the community, to offer settlement services with a wider scope, as required by the Team Lead.
Administration and Reporting
  • Responsible for accurately entering client information and service recordings into the Gateway System, including any follow-up services provided, in a timely manner;
  • Complete group session forms, along with required evaluations and outcome measurements;
  • Prepare and submit weekly update reports;
  • Conduct orientation/workshop group activities and community outreach reports;
  • Submit client success stories on a quarterly basis;
  • Participate in strategic and organizational planning as required;
  • Any additional tasks as required by the Team Lead.
Qualifications and skills:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences, Business or related discipline.
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity – Previous experience working across a variety of cultural and language groups;
  • Strong networks within the community (e.g. community groups, places of worship, ethno-cultural organizations, employers, service agencies etc.);
  • Excellent knowledge of software applications such as MS Office and SharePoint, and comfortable using different software, while learning/adopting others as they arise;
  • Experience using Salesforce an asset;
  • Strong knowledge of community programs and resources, including employability and the local labour market;
  • Excellent English ability with exceptional skills in verbal, written, and electronic communication;
  • A second language is required (preferred Pashto, Dari, Ukrainian, Russian);
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer services and organizational skills;
  • Demonstrate initiative and creativity while balancing multiple responsibilities and tasks at one time;
  • Ability to operate with minimal supervision, clerical, and technical support;
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines and adapt to rapidly changing situations;
  • Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends; and,
  • Ability to be flexible and work from home, onsite, or in-office as required
