A Day in the Life…

Reporting to the Manager, Mechanical Services, the Facilities Technician monitors, inspects, operates, and maintains all building mechanical and associated systems.

As the Facilities Technician, you will:

  • Operate, monitor, inspect and perform routine maintenance on various building systems, such as HVAC systems, air compressors, water treatment systems, heating/cooling systems, vacuum systems, steam systems, pumps and pumping systems, hydraulic systems, and other complex mechanical systems.
  • Perform troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and repair of various building systems, such as heating/cooling systems and associated equipment, compressed air systems, water treatment systems, steam systems, hydraulic systems, boilers, and aspects of research equipment (fume hoods, BSCs, autoclaves, etc.).
  • Act as on-call Facilities Technician (and/or Millwright) by responding to priority calls requiring immediate attention, on failed or compromised equipment components.
  • Inspect, test, and verify operation of building automation systems (BAS) and life safety systems.
  • Work with other Facilities Management staff and/or contracted trades on mechanical or building operational related items. Identify and report building deficiencies as seen.

What you Need to Succeed…

  • Facilities Technician trade certification 255B or equivalent.
  • Current Ontario driver’s license with an acceptable driver’s abstract.
  • 2+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of all building systems including mechanical, electrical, and building automation (BAS).
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, work orders, schematics, and technical instructions.
  • Ability to inspect fire safety equipment and building system equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to use PC-based software systems such as CAD, MS-Office Suite, CMMS, and other related software.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Ability to work as a team to brainstorm solutions, as well as independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, faculty, students, and visitors within the physical space being maintained.
  • Ability to estimate equipment and component requirements for renovations, installations, and repairs.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and continually assess risks.
  • Ability to resolve emergency situations.

Preferred or Asset Skills:

  • Industrial Mechanic/Millwright 433A;
  • Building Environmental Systems Operator Class 1.
  • Gas Fitter ticket (G1 or G2).
  • Welder certification 456A or equivalent.

Salary and Benefit Information

  • CUPE 1295: $33.59-$35.83*;
  • This position includes full comprehensive benefits including tuition waiver.

*Salary defined by the CUPE 1295 collective agreement
