Required Abilities, Qualifications and Experience:

  • extensive academic training and post graduate coursework in the following areas: students with special needs; assessment/testing theory and practice (Level B); strategies for adapting and modifying curriculum
  • knowledge of, and demonstrated application of the Ministry of Education’s current philosophy, teaching practices, and evaluation/assessment/reporting procedures as outlined in the Manual of Policies, Procedures and Guidelines for Special Education Services
  • demonstrated experience and ability in being able to carry out a variety of assessments, including classroom observation, curriculum based assessment and diagnostic teaching methods, administration and interpretation of Level B Assessments including the WIAT, PPVT, Key Math and TOWL
  • demonstrated experience in and knowledge of methods for evaluating and selecting instructional materials suitable for students with a variety of special needs and learning disabilities
  • knowledge of and demonstrated experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of IEPs in consultation with the classroom teacher(s), parent(s), student and district personnel
  • specialized course work in the following areas of ELL: teaching methodology, cross-cultural sensitization, multicultural studies, and applied linguistics
  • cultural awareness and experience in Aboriginal Education
  • experience teaching landed immigrant and international ELL students
  • knowledge of ELL Ministry of Education eligibility criteria for 1701 reporting
  • experience in conducting formal, level B assessments on ELL students
  • experience in developing Annual Individual Plans (AIPs) for ELL students
  • knowledge of current best practices in education of ELL students
  • knowledge of SIOP or a willingness to be trained in SIOP
  • teaching experience and academic training and qualifications in support of students at the middle school level
  • successful experience teaching K to 8
  • demonstrated ability to provide early literacy intervention
  • university coursework or other relevant academic training in Indigenous Studies
  • demonstrated ability in working with School Based team and teachers to develop, implement and monitor student success plans, as informed by the assessment and reporting cycle
  • demonstrated ability to co-teach and co-plan alongside classroom teachers to integrate Indigenous content into the curriculum
  • demonstrated knowledge and understanding of using the First Peoples’ Principles of Learning in teaching practice
  • demonstrated evidence of strong interpersonal skills with the ability to be innovative/creative when meeting with families in school or at home in support of achieving school success
  • ability to initiate and sustain outreach work with families and education partners within the Indigenous community, including but not limited to First Nations, Metis Association and community education leaders
  • university coursework or other relevant academic training in Indigenous studies
  • proven experience supporting teachers as they learn, think and reflect on goals of the Indigenous Education Enhancement Agreement
  • demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Sto:lo culture and heritage
  • preference will be given to candidates of Indigenous descent
  • demonstrated awareness, sensitivity, and understanding of adolescent development
  • demonstrated commitment to and engagement in lifelong professional and personal learning
