JOB SUMMARY:

The role of the Embryologist requires collaborative relationships both within and outside the laboratory. Reporting to the Scientific Director, the Embryologist will work autonomously carrying out routine laboratory procedures in the IVF lab. This requires close collaboration with the attending REI Physician and excellent communication with clinic staff and patients. The Embryologist will participate in establishing and maintaining standards of practice, policies and procedures at ONE Fertility. The Embryologist will perform specialized Human Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) at ONE Fertility while maintaining the highest level of clinical/quality control/research of embryology and andrology laboratory procedures.

DUTIES:

  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with patient/families and interdisciplinary colleagues
  • Act as an effective team member by sharing opinions, debating issues and aligning personal objectives with those of the team
  • Report any critical incident in a timely fashion to the Scientific Director and participate in continuous quality assessment and risk management on an ongoing basis
  • Work toward the ultimate goal of attaining the highest possible patient satisfaction through creating and maintaining efficiencies in the laboratory.

Administration

  • Work in partnership with administration
  • Participate in the development of policies, procedures and standards, as they relate to laboratory procedures used in the treatment of infertility patients and their families
  • Assist with planning and implementation of changes within the assisted reproductive therapies service
  • Participate on appropriate committees
  • Assist with preparation of quarterly reports
  • Carry out the necessary procedures and documentation as prescribed by the Canadian Assisted Reproduction Registry (CARTR) and/or Health Canada for assisted conception services and procedures
  • Prepare for site visitation and accreditation by Accreditation Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or any other licensing body that ONE Fertility is required for certification and licensing

Research and Teaching

  • Engage in the advancement of scientific knowledge by participating in research-related activities
  • Identify and research ART questions through critical analysis and by using the scientific method
  • Work in collaboration with other trainees including fellows, residents, medical and graduate students
  • Assist in the training of new staff hired by ONE Fertility

Professional Development

  • Demonstrate an ongoing commitment for continuing self development
  • Participate in professional associations at a regional, national, and international level
  • Maintain clinical competence through the integration of practice, education and research within the specialty role

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced and complex laboratory techniques (e.g. micromanipulation techniques)
  • Advanced microscopy skills including ICSI and Assisted Hatching
  • Excellent manual dexterity, eyesight and hand-to-eye coordination
  • Ability to properly evaluate gametes and embryos
  • Ability to perform general laboratory techniques (e.g. media preparation, processing of specimens, operation/trouble shooting of equipment, quality control procedures)
  • Ability to properly assess specimens and select adequate processing procedures
  • Ability to identify unusual specimens/situations, which require the attention of the Scientific Director
  • Analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and work independently
  • Ability to manage conflicting demands (e.g. unexpected procedures time changes, equipment availability)
  • Above average skills in computer applications (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software, database, statistical software, etc.) and proper use of the internet as a information/research tool
  • Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in written format
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Experience

  • Two years of recent laboratory experience in reproductive biology
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of laboratory procedures, instruments, equipment and special techniques (on-the-job experience), in assigned area required
  • ICSI and Assisted Hatching experience an asset

Education

  • B.Sc., or M.Sc. in Biology/ Physiology/ Embryology.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: $30.00-$36.00 per hour
