Director of Education

SUMMARY:

The NAN Director Education oversees the Nishnawbe Aski Nation Education Department and is a member of the NAN senior management team. This position is critical to the success in NAN supporting the delivery of First Nation education and in advocating for improvements in the scope and quality of education programs and services available to NAN First Nation students attending Council Operated and Provincially Funded schools.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the Nishnawbe Aski Nation Education Program
  • Supervise all permanent and contract Education Program staff
  • Represent NAN at the regional and national levels on education matters
  • Maintain effective political and program relationships with appropriate Provincial and Federal representatives
  • Keep current on evolving First Nation education trends, challenges and policies
  • Coordinate the activities of the NAN Chiefs Committee on Education and the NAN Education Committee
  • Maintain ongoing liaison with Tribal Council and other NAN Education organizations
  • Manage First Nation specific issues as referred to NAN for assistance
  • Prepare all required work plans, budgets and reports as required of the NAN Education program internally and funding agencies
  • Build and maintain a strong level of trust and respect within NAN and with other regional and national education organizations
  • Oversees programs, budgets, reporting staff, special projects, partnerships, and interdepartmental initiatives.

Political Advisory

· To provide technical support and liaison with respect to emerging Education issues

o To review, research, analyze and develop policy recommendations in relation to First Nations, federal and provincial government positions, policies and programs by:

§ Consulting Aboriginal organization affiliates and First Nations regarding the impact of existing programs and policies and potential implications of those proposed;

§ Considering First Nations’ positions relative to government initiatives and by consolidating these various positions into one unified position where required;

§ Conducting research, analyses, evaluations and reviews in relation to government policies and procedures;

§ Identifying, researching, and analyzing emerging issues and trends;

§ Developing strategies/policies to deal with existing and proposed government policy, programs and legislation;

§ Developing position papers, memos, briefing notes, reports and submissions analyzing government initiatives and proposing alternative programs and policies, and;

§ Reporting to the Executive regarding government initiatives and proposed strategies to deal with these initiatives.

  • To undertake research projects, as required and assist in developing communication and information materials;
  • To draft correspondence, proposals, internal documents and briefing notes under the authorization of portfolio holder;
  • To coordinate information exchange between the executive portfolio holder, management and staff on matters which require attention and action and will include organizing meetings and teleconference calls;
  • To review, summarize and analyze technical, policy and political reports and documents received by the portfolio holder;
  • Assist with the development of media releases and speaking notes as may be requested by the Deputy Grand Chief or Grand Chief
  • To prepare briefing materials for the Executive Council when requested
  • Other duties as required

ACCOUNTABILITY:

The Director is under the supervision of and is accountable to the Chief Administrative Officer. The Director will receive political direction from the Deputy Grand Chief holding the Education Portfolio.

COMPETENCIES AND QUALIFICATION:

Candidate must possess the following skills and attributes:

Education/Experience:

  • 5+ years related education work experience
  • Bachelor or Master’s Degree in a training or education-related area
  • Experience in supervision of staff
  • Knowledge of First Nation education issues, challenges and delivery models
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Proven effectiveness in project management
  • Ability to work in a close team environment with others
  • Strong communication skills with proficiency in developing written communications and the development and delivery of oral presentations
  • Extensive travel may be required
  • Ability to speak Ojibwe, Oji-Cree or Cree is an asset

Preference will be given to Individuals who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Metis or Inuit) with the required combination of education and experience.
