Supporting the VP, Controller and VP, Investments, the Director, Investment Accounting and Operations plays a key role in supporting the Company’s investment strategy and overseeing the day-to-day and longer-term work of the department.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for multiple systems and processes across investment operations, portfolio management and accounting, including integrations and data feeds between systems (ie: custodian, trade ops, accounting, etc).
- Provide leadership, direction, and support to a team of accounting professionals, establishing department objectives and managing ongoing performance.
- Responsible for oversight and overall project management of complex initiatives related to investment management, including but not limited to system transitions and implementation, onboarding of new investment strategies, regulatory changes, and accounting policy changes.
- Act as the Company’s technical resource and expert on investments and derivatives, fostering an open-door and collaborative environment.
- Support the VP, Investments, with compliance monitoring of the Company’s investment portfolio including operations management.
- Plan, direct, and control the day-to-day operation and administration for investments & derivatives, ensuring complete, accurate, and timely reporting of investments activities.
- Oversee portfolio reporting produced by external service providers and asset managers, including analytics, exposures, performance, and attribution.
- Develop and manage external vendor relationships, including performing service level reviews for custody, asset managers, outsourcing partners, service vendors, as applicable.
- Support the VP, Controller, with management and oversight of financial reporting close cycles related to investments and derivatives (monthly, quarterly, annually) ensuring all accounting and reporting deliverables are met.
- Manage the external service provider that provides outsourced investment accounting services; ensuring the Company’s accounting is administered and completed to expectations and meets all required controls.
- Manage interim and annual audit processes related to investments and derivatives; including but not limited to reconciliations, financial statement disclosures, MD&A disclosures, activity reports, variance reporting, etc.
- Support the VP, Controller and VP, Investments, in developing and maintaining accounting and business policies related to investments and derivatives (ie: classification and measurement, impairment, valuation, hedge accounting, credit losses, etc).
- Manage schedules for regulatory capital reporting as it relates to investments and derivatives.
- Lead and ensure timely reporting of investments and derivatives results to parent company Brookfield.
- Collaborate with FP&A team and lead financial forecasting and planning for investments and derivatives.
- Collaborate with Risk and Actuarial team regarding annual regulatory reporting requirements.
- Establish and maintain investment risk management policies, controls, and reporting.
- Participate in and present at Investment Committee meetings and investment strategy planning sessions with senior management, as required. Support the VP Investments in preparation for the meetings.
- Responsible for anticipating internal and external business challenges & regulatory issues and recommending process, product improvements impacting the Company’s investment strategy and operations as applicable.
- University Degree and CPA Designation required. CFA designation an asset.
- 5+ years of progressive experience in investment accounting and financial reporting required.
- Strong leadership skills with progressive management experience overseeing the work of professional level direct reports.
- Demonstrated success managing the relationship and work of third-party services providers.
- Understanding and experience in accounting and financial reporting for financial instruments.
- Understanding of IFRS accounting principles, knowledge of IFRS 9: Financial Instruments required.
- Requires a strong control mindset to ensure key preventative and detective controls are in place and a strong governance and internal controls environment is maintained.
- Experience with multi-asset and multi-manager portfolios with knowledge of financial instruments used by institutional investment companies.
- Knowledge of financial markets and all major asset classes, including derivative financial instruments such as foreign exchange forwards, cross currency swaps, interest rate swaps, and interest rate floors.
- Knowledge of the risk/return trade-offs of various investment styles and strategies, including derivative overlay strategies.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to translate complex information for a non-technical audience at all levels in the organization.
- Comfortable operating and navigating in a collaborative work environment where the key to success will be in developing and maintaining relationships with internal partners such as: Finance, Legal, IT, Risk, Actuary, and Internal Audit.
- Superior analytical skills and the ability to think through problems and recommend solutions, with proven track record of delivering results to unique and complex problems as they arise.
- Advanced skills and knowledge of data analytics and associated computer applications. Proficient in identifying and improving manual processes using automation and digital transformation.
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Office tools, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
- Thrives in a dynamic and fast-paced environment and is able to manage multiple competing priorities.
- Experience with no-code platforms, such as Quickbase, is an asset.
