THE OPPORTUNITY

What You’ll Do: the Director, Health and Safety is accountable and responsible for providing overall leadership and direction for Western’s Health and Safety system as well as ensuring the appropriate structure and framework exists to provide a safe and healthful workplace for all Western’s employees and contractors. The Director, Health and Safety provides oversight to the design and delivery of sound business and safety practices to achieve a zero-incident workplace, intentionally fosters a company-wide safety culture of commitment and continuous improvement, and ensures Western’s Health & Safety Management System (HSMS) is in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

Who You Are: The ideal candidate will have a minimum 15 years of progressive experience in the field of Health and Safety with at least 5 years at a corporate leadership level. In addition, you bring 5 years’ experience in a safety leadership position within a union environment preferably in a manufacturing or industrial setting and a certificate or degree in OHS or equivalent along with a CRSP designation.

Work Environment: This position is to be performed in person at either our Nanaimo, BC or Campbell River, BC office, with proper safety protocols in place. This role also requires travel between our Manufacturing and Timberlands operations in both Canada and the US.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety Leadership

  • Provides leadership in safety stewardship by demonstrating and ensuring the adherence of company safety and sustainability processes and procedures;
  • Delivers Western HSMS based on a principled approach to achieve long term, mutually beneficial relationships and a healthful environment for all Western employees;
  • Acts as a leadership advisor providing the platform, tools, metrics, training and consultation to assist operations leaders in delivering a zero-incident workplace for all employees and contractors;
  • Provide subject matter expertise to business and operations leaders;
  • Supports operations in meeting their safety goal of a zero-incident workplace through modelling a commitment to safety values, training employees in safety management best practices, assisting with hazard identification, and providing day-to-day guidance on safety related issues;
  • Protects Western’s reputation by managing issues, engaging support from senior leadership as required;
  • Represents Western as safety advocate with regulatory bodies and industry associations; and
  • Responsible for the management and oversight functions for the Health and Safety team.

Health and Safety Operations

  • Continuously reviews the HSMS, training and tracking platforms, and safety culture for opportunities for improvement;
  • Partners with operational leaders to develop and implement targeted safety improvement plans;
  • Development of key safety initiatives to support continuous improvement in MIR, TIR, SR;
  • Drives accountability through leadership of regular health and safety meetings, site visits, safety investigations and acts as a business partner with operational leaders to advise and make recommendation for safety improvements; and
  • Key Safety Lead in major investigations, providing timely feedback to Senior Vice President, Human Resources & Corporate Affairs and Executive. Works closely with labour partners and regulatory bodies as needed;

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in the field of Health and Safety with at least 5 years at a corporate leadership level;
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a safety leadership position within a union environment in a manufacturing or industrial setting;
  • Experience driving both Canada and US safety leadership;
  • Certificate or Degree in OHS or equivalent; and
  • CRSP Designation.
