We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Director of Actuarial Solutions. Reporting to the Vice President, Underwriting and Marketing, the Director, Actuarial Solutions is a member of the leadership team, who are collectively responsible for the development and execution of our long-term strategic plan. With a vision for the future, the Director will set the strategic direction for the Actuarial Solutions portfolio, ensuring the department is structured effectively to meet the demands of the business. As a valued member of the team, the Director will make a meaningful contribution to our growth initiatives, products, projects and business ventures.

On a temporary basis, the Director, Actuarial Services will also fulfill the management responsibilities for the team, including mentoring a team of actuarial professionals, and holding responsibility for the oversight of the day-to-day deliverables.

The successful candidate may work remotely within Canada, however, hours of work must reasonably coincide with MST and travel to the Edmonton office will be required.

Key Accountabilities:

Strategic Leadership

· Participate in strategic planning with the executive team, assist in establishing PHI’s overall strategic objectives

· Support the execution of PHI’s overall strategic objectives

· Develop and execute a comprehensive, clear Actuarial strategy that exhibits effective planning and ensures agility

· Effectively plan and prioritize the Actuarial portfolio to achieve organizational goals.

· Achieve organizational goals as it relates to the Actuarial portfolio and optimize the pricing strategy.

· Stay abreast of advancements within the Actuarial field and make recommendations as to their suitability for PHI

· Drive the actuarial portfolio forward, bringing a creative approach to solving problems and out of the box thinking

· Demonstrate engagement in the insurance industry by participating in industry groups and developing strategic relationships and partnerships

Actuarial Leadership

· Oversee, direct and approve actuarial analysis of insurance rates, rating procedures and rating plans for all current and future lines of business

· Approve actuarial rate filings and provide support as required

· Provide advice and support to internal business partners

· Identify profitable markets and develop appropriate rates for new products in conjunction with internal stakeholders

· Provide support to the reinsurance program, including engagement with external partners and active participation in meetings.

· Develop and implement controls and documentation of assumptions, methods, and processes, and streamline current recurring processes.

· Develop and maintain actuarial practices and approaches that support the business/business initiatives and changing legislation, such as IFRS 17

· Report on actuarial metrics by product line, with a focus on review of products, market analysis and return on financial objectives

People Leadership

· Drive a department culture centered around delivering exceptional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders

· Create a motivating work culture of high performance, continuous improvement, empowerment, collaboration, and innovation

· Promote, support and mentor junior actuarial staff in completing their exams and furthering their education

· Consistently deliver exceptional results by demonstrating drive, initiative, engagement, and accountability and instill these characteristics within the Actuarial department

Education and Experience:

· Degree in Actuarial Science or a relevant field of study such as Business or Mathematics and Applied Science

· FCIA and FCAS is required

· Minimum 10 years of property and casualty rating experience. Commercial property, reserving, reinsurance and IFRS 17 knowledge would be considered an asset

· Experience with the insurance platform Guidewire would be an asset

· Experience with strategic leadership

· Strong management experience, demonstrated by successfully leading and mentoring a team of actuarial professionals

· Experience in complex reinsurance programs would be an asset

· Knowledge of underwriting and risk management
