The university’s new operating model consists of a hybrid of centralized and decentralized services which promotes consistency, avoids duplication, and supports a one-university approach and service culture. Core to the model is the establishment of the university’s three new colleges: the College of Health Sciences, the College of Natural and Applied Sciences, and the College of Social Sciences and Humanities. The colleges leverage excellence within all departments and faculties to improve both academic and administrative performance as One University.

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities brings together the combined strength of all 4 major faculties, enabling a new level of interdisciplinary research and teaching that advances the full spectrum of academic knowledge in individuals and communities around the world. The college includes 4 faculties (Alberta School of Business , Arts, Education, and Law), more than 510 faculty members, and more than 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

The University of Alberta and College of Social Sciences and Humanities now invites applications for the appointment of Dean, Alberta School of Business. Serving as the University of Alberta's faculty of business since 1916, the Alberta School of Business has consistently held rankings among the top institutions nationally and globally. The school has more than 30,000 alumni living in 80 countries worldwide and in the 2021/2022 calendar year, the School was home to 3,120 total students and graduated 989. The Alberta School of Business ranked #1 in Canada and #30 globally according to the Shanghai Academic Subject: Business Administration rankings in 2022.

The Alberta School of Business is home to nearly 70 faculty members and over 50 doctoral students who continually advance the understanding of important issues facing business. Many of the faculty members are world-renowned for their expertise, and the younger faculty and doctoral students are in the forefront of creating improved explanations for business phenomena. The faculty brings a zest for scholarly discovery for stakeholders, especially students in the classroom and managers of all types of organizations, inspiring them to improve existing practices and explore innovative new practices. The School fosters and encourages excellence in research and has a high degree of success publishing in highly regarded journals including the Financial Times Top 50 Journals.

Reporting to the Vice-Provost and College Dean, College of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Dean of the Alberta School of Business is responsible for the leadership and administration of all aspects of the operations of the Faculty, including budget and fund development. In addition to the role of senior officer of the Faculty, and a member of Deans’ Council, the Dean is a senior administrator of the University. The Dean fosters an environment in which world-leading research and excellence in teaching and engaged scholarship flourish. As the face of the Alberta School of Business, the Dean is champion of curricular initiatives, research, and scholarship, professional training, global outreach, and recruitment of high quality faculty and student talent. The Dean cultivates an environment in which students, faculty and staff thrive.

As Dean, you will have an earned Doctorate or equivalent in a relevant field and qualifications commensurate with an appointment with tenure at the rank of Professor. In addition, you are a distinguished scholar who has maintained an active program of scholarly inquiry while holding a senior-level administrative position within an academic environment. You will bring a successful track record of fostering research excellence and publishing in top management journals while being a dynamic and visionary leader. You support innovative teaching methods and approaches to foster high-quality learning environments. As a business educator, you support innovative teaching methods and approaches to foster high-quality learning environments for diverse business students.

As a leader, you have demonstrated experience fostering a culture of collegiality and collaboration within a university environment for faculty, staff, and students. In addition to this, you will bring exceptional relationship building skills with the ability to advocate for the School and build relationships with a complex stakeholder group including the regional, national, and international business community. With an authentic and demonstrated commitment to, understanding of, and experience leading equity, diversity, and inclusion practices and Indigenous engagement, the successful candidate will drive change and inspire faculty, students, staff, and community partners.

This position is a full-time, continuing appointment and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits and an annual salary of 250,000 to 340,000.
