Position: Dairy Goat Barn Manager, Milker & Farm Labourer

on REGENERATIVE HERITAGE FARM

Type: Full time, 5 days/week

Location: Oro-Medonte, Ontario (10 minutes north of Barrie, Ontario, Canada L4M 4Y8)

Starting: Immediately

Salary: Dependent on experience plus accommodation (or starting at $1,200/month plus accommodation).

The Farm: We are a diversified fourth generation diversified farm (pasture raised Black Angus cattle, Saanen dairy goat herd, and much more) incorporating Regenerative Farming practices. We plan to grow the goat dairy herd to 160 with the objective to produce artisanal cheese on site. We provide accommodation on site (a private room in a shared century farmhouse, utilities, internet, laundry) at a subsidized rate.

Position Summary:

  • Husbandry and daily care for the goats (feeding, bedding, water, kid care and management, and milking daily).
  • In consultation with farm manager/owner, development and oversight of herd management and milk production plans.
  • Training and supervision of dairy barn personnel/milkers.
  • Ensuring proper sanitization and operation of milking equipment.
  • General oversight over health and well-being of the goats, including promoting best management practices, ethical animal treatment.
  • General oversight of the barn maintenance including repairs, manure removal and bedding, etc.
  • Ensuring the maintenance of good record keeping for both husbandry purposes (e.g. breeding, kidding and vaccination events, health concerns) etc.
  • Weekly reports

Skills/Attributes:

  • Milking experience with goats or husbandry experience with cattle is an asset.
  • Farm work experience is an asset.
  • Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow directions and work efficiently and independently.
  • Ability to be a team player.
  • Honest, hard-working, and reliable.
  • Enthusiastic, can-do attitude and the ability to be adaptable.
  • Desire to live and work on a farm and expect that farm life is hard yet rewarding work that you can love.
  • If you don’t have goat husbandry experience, a willingness to learn what is required for both good husbandry as well accepted sanitary practices for milk intended for human consumption.
