Seeking a Cultural Support Worker

Under the general direction of the Team Lead, the Strengthening Homefires Cultural Support Worker (SHCSW) will serve as an ally to mentor, guide and develop a cultural base program called “Creating Hope Strengthening Homefires Cultural Support Program” and other duties as required.

Upon referrals from the HUBS, SHCSW consults with Indigenous participants to provide/connect them with a range of Indigenous-specific supports in the HUBS that Creating Hope Society serves.

Program Summary: Creating Hope Society is a Spoke service serving the HUBS: YMCA North Central, Fort Saskatchewan Families First, Leduc County and the City of Leduc. The Strengthening Homefires Cultural Support Worker will work with the Team Lead and HUBS to identify the needs of individuals and families. The program and services are based on respectful dialogue and engagement. A strong focus will be providing holistic activities that offer social and personal wellness in a safe environment. This position is based in Edmonton and will work with the YMCA North Central Family Resource Network. Some evening and week-ends may be required.

The goal of Strengthening Homefires Cultural Support Program is to support our participants by providing a holistic strength-based approach. The program is designed to enhance the families’ capacities, needs, resources and goals in their communities. These can include but are not limited to: cultural activities, support groups, in-home support, daily support to program participants, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous. Using a culturally informed model that is rooted in early intervention and prevention, the SCSW walks alongside clients in their self-identified and self-determined goals for healing, culture, and community integration; while providing and accessing resources as needed.

Diversity: Serves a diverse group of people, and we need a staff group that reflects that diversity. This position is for folks who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Native American, Inuit, and Metis).

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promote and support traditional cultural teachings and practice for our families, and community.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining an environment of safety and wellness in the programming areas.
  • Work with children and families to provide cultural teachings and assist in the development and implementation of cultural components to the programs using tools such as Traditional Parenting.
  • Provides supportive and trusting relationships with the Family members
  • Engaging Elders, and Knowledge keepers that would guide staff in promoting partnerships to promote traditional healing, cultural teachings while working from the Social Work framework.
  • Creating opportunities for participants to engage in Indigenous Cultural activities, practices, and ceremonies.
  • Attend team meetings, agency meetings, participate in service team meetings and or case conferences within community or partnering organizations.
  • Ensure that accurate program and participant records are maintained, and that confidentiality is a priority.
  • Ensure that all relevant documentation is completed. (contact notes, pre-post evaluation, quarterly/monthly reports, community meeting update reports). Referrals to other agencies for participants, as needed.
  • Adheres to Creating Hope Society policies and procedures and CHS orientation manual.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Social Work diploma, Human Services Diploma, or Indigenous Studies or 3 years’ relevant experience.
  • Experience in cultural teachings, traditional knowledge, and different healing practices.
  • Experience working with children, youth and families.
  • Help build a model of cultural safety for grieving, while utilizing trauma informed practices.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multitask in a dynamic working environment; self-motivated personality; ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Demonstrates an ability to maintain composure and performance while under stress or pressure.
  • Valid Alberta Driver’s License, 2 million insurance and liability coverage, drivers abstract, criminal record check, and child welfare check is required.
