Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte (MBQ) is a vibrant First Nation community located on the beautiful shores of the
Bay of Quinte. We are located approximately 20 minutes from Belleville, ON and centrally located between
Toronto and Ottawa. There are approximately 11,000 registered members with approximately 2200 residing in

Position Summary:
The Counsellor at Red Cedars works in conjunction with the Red Cedars team to provide a safe and secure environment to women and children who are fleeing family violence and are in a crisis. This position is part of a
24/7 operation, where shift work is required, including days, afternoons, nights, and weekends.

Reporting:
This position will report to the Red Cedars Manager. This position has no direct reports.

Summary of Main Responsibilities:

  • Working all shifts as scheduled by the Manager, Position requires counsellor to work all shifts, on a rotating schedule (Red Cedars is a 24-hour operation)
  • Maintaining strict adherence to all security measures and confidentiality of information for the safety and security of all residents
  • Completing admission and discharges in accordance with policies and procedures and to complete telephone screening intakes, evaluations and “plans of intervention” with residents as well as case conference all clients
  • Must provide grammatically correct, clear, and concise reports as required
  • Maintaining up to date files
  • Delivering programs, either through educational sessions, circles, or informal means of teaching, one on one and in a group
  • Promoting and supporting community activities and projects concerning issues affecting women and children
  • Leading a health and safety culture
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Post-Secondary Diploma in Social Services or another related field;
  • Minimum two years’ relevant experience; or
  • A combination of Education, Experience and Training may be considered
  • Experience in a First Nations setting preferred
  • Must provide a clear CPIC and VSC (documentation will be required if successful applicant)
  • First Aid and CPR an asset (and must be willing to take the training if hired)
  • Valid Driver’s License and vehicle

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to handle crisis situations
  • Strong working knowledge of confidentiality policy and procedures.
  • Experience working with Domestic abuse survivors
  • Knowledge of Community and Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and Community Wellbeing Departments and Resources available, including the surrounding area.
  • Knowledge and understanding of indigenous cultures, traditions, and healing methods.
  • Experience with computer programs (i.e. Microsoft Office, email and internet
  • Ability to self reflect and share
  • Ability to work as an individual and as part of a team
  • Well developed interpersonal, public relations and relationship building skills
  • Excellent organizational, time and file management skills
  • Working knowledge of family violence
  • Understanding of the impacts of colonization and inter-generational trauma
  • Knowledge of legislation and government agencies an asset
