The salary range for this position is:

Recruitment range: $89,481 - $100,606 maximum starting salary is determined through knowledge, experience and internal equity.

Performance range: starting salary to max of $128,422 is available through annual performance increases.

An employee in this classification is excluded from the bargaining unit as defined in the Labour Relations Code

Job Summary

The Office of the General Counsel is responsible for providing on-site legal and strategic advice to the University including all levels of the University administration. The General Counsel works with other units on the development of policies and procedures to ensure legal compliance and manage risk, and provides broad oversight on all matters related to the legal and regulatory requirements under which the University operates. The General Counsel has conduct over and is accountable for all legal matters arising at the University and for protecting the University’s legal corporate interests.

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Legal Counsel is responsible for the provision of legal advice to the University of Victoria through members of the university community as assigned, and for providing support to the General Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer and Legal Counsel.

Legal Counsel provides general legal advice consisting primarily of solicitor’s work. This work primarily focuses on providing legal advice in areas including liability/indemnity, student conduct, human rights and employment law, and advising on the application of university policies, contract and policy/procedure drafting and reviews, and legal research in various areas of law. The work also includes liaising with external counsel on various administrative tribunal and litigation matters.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and experience:

  • Eligible to practice law in BC (i.e., a member in good standing with a Canadian Law Society)
  • Minimum 2-3 years’ experience as a lawyer
  • Experience with solicitor’s work, including contract review, revision and drafting would be an asset.
  • Experience in employment, labour and human rights law would be an asset.
