Program Overview

The Local Immigration Partnership (LIP) is a community-based partnership that involves a range of stakeholders in the planning and development of collaborative and innovative solutions to enhance newcomer settlement. Partners include service provider organizations, levels of government, school boards, professional associations, ethno-cultural organizations, faith-based organizations, and the community. JVS is the lead agency for the Toronto North LIP (TNLIP), one of four quadrant LIPs in Toronto.


We’re looking for someone who will:

  • Coordinate in-depth and ongoing research to better support local community agencies in their service to newcomers in North York, incorporating our three areas of focus: Health, Settlement, and Employment
  • Support the continuation of our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) InterLIP Framework
  • Develop research proposals, goals, establish methods and be able to conduct both qualitative & quantitative analysis
  • Produce annual community-based trends and demographic Snapshots of North York
  • Keep our Partner agencies up to date on external relevant research by reading, understanding, and summarizing key findings, and making them accessible to service providers and front line staff. This requires a clear understanding of Knowledge Translation
  • Use previously published research analyses of newcomer experiences of racism in North York to support and develop recommendations for continued work in our other areas of Health, Settlement and Employment
  • Identify trends and find creative ways to collaboratively address barriers for newcomers to accessing employment, settlement, and health services in North York
  • Meet and build relationships with Grassroots Organizations and Community-led groups
  • Support our team in bringing EDI to current and future initiatives of TNLIP project
  • Maintain the TNLIP Communications Strategy by developing bi-weekly newsflashes, writing a quarterly newsletter, sharing key information to social media, finding creative ways to get information to our partners, and being on top of opportunities to best support our community with accessible information
  • Support the writing of RFPs, Letters of Support, and grants as needed
  • Attend community-based neighbourhood meetings (such as NIAs), support when needed
  • Support team-initiatives when required, such as participating in planning of events, agenda development, minute taking, outreach, facilitation, among other support
  • Engage with members interested in supporting research development and dissemination of our North York-wide agency-based partnership when necessary
  • Work collaboratively with other Work Groups and LIPs; provide support within TNLIP to ensure overall project results are achieved

Minimum Qualifications & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Political Science, Community Planning, International Development, Media and Culture, Communications, Knowledge Integration, or a related field. International degrees must be evaluated for Canadian equivalency.
  • 2 years of related experience
  • Ability to travel frequently across GTA and run both in-person and on-line meetings
  • Experience conducting complex research projects
  • Asset: experience working with community members to conduct qualitative data collection and analysis. Familiar with Toronto’s data systems and capable of incorporating mixed methods
  • Strong computer literacy, and ability to work with Canada-wide data systems
  • Existing expertise in coordinating and leading community meetings
  • Comfortable with public speaking, especially in sharing research outcomes to community partners
  • Strong interpersonal skills; comfortable regularly networking and making connections
  • Sensitivity to diversity and ability to work with vulnerable populations and professionals
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills; comfortable with public speaking
  • Ability to write reports quickly and cohesively
  • Effective with independent time management and organization skills; ability to strategically plan ahead and manage more than one project at a time
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team player
  • Computer literate
  • A clear Police Vulnerable Sector check is required for this position

Flexible hours / evenings / weekends will be occasionally required for this position.


Our ideal candidate will also have:

  • A Master’s Degree or higher with experience conducting primary research
  • Proven ties and strong familiarity with Research and Communications
  • Strong knowledge-base of immigration, settlement and community programs (including familiarity with employment, health and settlement)
  • Experience in community development
