POSITION SUMMARY

The Communications Manager will lead the development and implementation of all company communications while ensuring stakeholder engagement with Seabird Island Band Members and other key stakeholder groups. The manager oversees the production of high-quality content that engages members and stakeholders while building brand recognition. Main duties include developing and managing a team to create informative content, press releases, articles, and diverse media to communicate our organization’s brand, products, and services.


The Communications Manager works collaboratively with all levels of leadership, senior management, and a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Management and leadership

  • Provide overall leadership to the Communications , including management of direct reports:
    • work planning, scheduling, payroll processing and assessment of staffing need.
    • Employee management: hiring/promotion, staff development, coaching/mentoring, and performance management. including but not limited to, conflict resolution, discipline, and termination recommendations.
    • authorizing leaves of absence.
    • evaluating the program to ensure appropriate quality and effective use of resources; and
    • promote shared team goals and collaboration among members.
  • Prepare business plans, annual operating and capital budgets pertaining to Communications, in consultation with
  • Monitor overall performance of Communications against the business plan and budget, including authorization of expenditures.
  • Prepare operating and capital budget variance reports and take corrective actions as required.
  • Administer/monitor the approved annual budget including authorization of expenditures.
  • Prepare and assist in the preparation of reports and recommendations for the Director and stakeholders.
  • Attend Committee, community and other public meetings and events as required. Make presentations and provide advice/guidance on Communications-related issues and strategies.
  • Initiate actions required by the Director and coordinate and monitor assigned tasks emerging from meetings as directed by the Director.
  • Accountable to ensure staff are knowledgeable of applicable health and safety legislation, are trained to act appropriately in emergency situations, practice safe program delivery, and operate equipment and materials safely utilizing safe work practices.

Engagement and marketing

  • Have a strong understanding of Seabird Island’s vision, policies, procedures, practices, and company culture.
  • Establish and maintain communications protocols, procedures, messaging style and branding that is reflective of company culture, its audience, and Indigenous culture.
  • Liaise with departments, the Executive Director, and stakeholders to recommend how to maximize the messaging from departments and the company to its various audiences.
  • Create dynamic, culturally reflective communication pieces that integrate Indigenous ways of communication with mainstream channels and enhance company culture in client, member and management relationships and organizational processes.
  • Craft new, innovative ways to build awareness, enhance engagement and promote understanding of the band’s priorities and key initiatives.
  • Manage internal companywide announcements, office activities such as press releases, internal communications for welcoming new employees, office participation in events, announcements, etc.
  • Manage external communications to neighboring communities, notifying members regarding grand openings, services, and press releases.
  • Establish and maintain all media relationships, collaborating with regional executives on media outreach, local news release distribution, pitching, speechwriting, and regional communications.
  • Manage promotion of events and follow-up reporting and debriefing is completed.
  • Develop, review, and publish communications from the Executive Director and management.
  • Manage and supervise communication campaigns (both communication and administrative aspects).
  • Advise on and develop crisis communications and emergency communications.
  • Identify, track, and monitor issues, concerns, and interests identified by Seabird Island, employees, members, and community as well as partners.
  • Be an identified spokesperson for Seabird Island throughout the region.
  • Manage support requests, and staff media interviews and speaking engagements.
  • Oversee collecting content and the delivery method for newsletters, management updates, which include statistics community involvement.

Strategic Planning and Support:

  • Connect strategic planning efforts to communication personnel to best communicate Seabird Island’s ongoing efforts, accomplishments, plans or goals.
  • Support company initiatives, by managing company cultural communication calendar and is a member of the Events Committee

Reporting:

  • Provide the Executive Director or department Directors with regular activity reports, including statistics, as well as annual summary reports.

Other:

  • Be a positive spokesperson for Seabird Island, actively supporting the vision, mission, and philosophy of the company.
  • Advocate for cultural inclusion.
  • Prepare updates and briefing reports as necessary.
  • Prepare grants and proposals related to communications and engagement.
  • Deliver presentations at meetings as needed.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your Manager, Director, or the ED.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or Business is required.
  • Marketing and Engagement/Public Relations and/or Communications experience is required
  • Municipal or Nonprofit Experience is an asset.
  • Excellent business communication, writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Experience working with a senior management and key stakeholders.
  • Ability to understand stats and data and be able to leverage these numbers in communications.
  • Knowledge of Communication and Public Relation industry standards
  • Communicate effectively and clearly, must be able to maintain grace under pressure.
  • Create dynamic communication pieces with very little direction.
  • Capacity to multi-task and to reset prioritizes throughout the day as this position handles the full spectrum of media relations and internal communications.
  • General knowledge about communications software and quick ability to figure out how to run a new platform or mobile application.
  • Creative, persuasive, and influential, professional demeanor
  • Experience working with First Nations community is considered an asset.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with an ability to prioritize timelines and important projects.
  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook);
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service focus and ability to provide services in a prompt, respectful and unbiased manner, in accordance with existing Seabird Island Band policies and procedures.

Requirements:


  • Strict adherence to an Oath of Confidentiality, Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedures.
  • Willingness to learn or prior knowledge, respect, and understanding of Stó:lō culture, history, traditions, and language;
  • Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5 and clean Driver’s Abstract.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check *Solicitor General CRRP*
