This position is fully funded through a CIHR grant. It is a temporary, full time position until March 31, 2026.
Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the Community Safety & Well-Being Specialist, is responsible for the successful planning and implementation of CityStudio Thunder Bay.
What is CityStudio?
A way for a municipality and academic institutions to collaborate every day to bring faculty and student expertise to work on joint projects. This position will be responsible for developing and implementing a CityStudio Model for Thunder Bay with community partners, where local faculty and students complete projects of civic importance (i.e. related to the Community Safety & Well-Being Plan).

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In partnership with community partners, facilitates the development and implementation of a CityStudio Model for Thunder Bay.
- Meets our CityStudio collaboration commitments to partners as outlined in service agreements.
- Establishes, nurtures and grows successful working relationships with City staff, Lakehead University, Northern Ontario School of Medicine University, community partners and the public to source and curate project ideas and course collaborations.
- Coordinates project introduction visits for courses at partner schools presenting the CityStudio vision and mission.
- Provides leadership, mentorship and coordination for CityStudio projects and special projects (up to 30/year), including vetting course readiness, co-facilitating project development workshops and meetings, connecting partners to existing resources, coordinating mid-project feedback sessions, and troubleshooting.
- Supports the identification and development of new strategic partnerships guided by the CityStudio Leadership Team.
- In partnership with course faculty, adapts and oversees an evaluation process for the projects, including supporting partner schools’ Research Ethics Board (REB) processes.
- Monitors and reports on implementation progress, collects project deliverables, metrics and impact stories, and collaborates on drafting partnership summaries and the annual report.
- Oversees and maintains contact information database.
- Provides orientation sessions with new faculty and City staff.
- Supports knowledge transfer to municipal and academic leaders, including coaching students and preparing presentations for municipal or academic leaders, and co-curating project showcase.
- Coordinates communications and promotion of CityStudio Thunder Bay.
- Supports grant writing and funding proposals.
- Participates in the global network of CityStudios.
- Follows and continuously improves project coordination processes and systems, proposes improvements, and develops resources as needed.
- Performs other related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
- Degree in social sciences, business administration, community development, education or related field;
- Minimum three years’ experience in project coordination or a management role in academic or civic/community environments;
- Knowledge of, and experience in, applying for federal and provincial government and non-government funding sources;
- Experience with community-based experiential learning and collaborative research at the college or university level, as well as experience with research ethics;
- Experience giving inspiring presentations and engaging the public, along with the ability to adapt messaging and style accordingly;
- Experience tracking project metrics and outcomes through an evaluation framework;
- Working knowledge of Community Safety & Well-Being and City of Thunder Bay priorities
Skills/Abilities:
- Superior ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing, with the ability to make presentations to a variety of audiences
- Demonstrates a deep understanding and commitment to CityStudio’s vision, goals, Manifesto, initiatives and impact
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with administration, , co-workers, employees, community groups and the general public
- Strong research, project/time management, and analytical skills
- Ability to identify, understand, and meet/exceed the requirements of internal/external customers
- Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Proven ability to function and contribute as an effective team member and to work independently
- Proven innovative and creative thinker, with the ability to find new and/or unique solutions to challenges
- Strong critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills
- Self-starter with proven organizational skills
- Strong professional curiosity and strategic thinking for city building, higher education, civic engagement, social innovation and collaboration
- Must be proficient in the use of computers and current related software
- Competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
Assets:
- Masters or PhD in social sciences or related field
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)
- Will be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transportation
