POSITION DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: CEMETERY GROUNDSPERSON

STATUS: Full-time, 40 hours per week. Monday through Friday (or as otherwise stated)

8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with ½ hour lunch.

SUPERVISOR: Senior Cemetery Operator

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Summary: To provide interment/entombment services to St. Andrew’s Cemetery; to undertake all activities involved in the service and maintenance of cemetery grounds, equipment and buildings.

Major Duties:

Under the technical supervision of the Senior Cemetery Operator carries out the following duties and responsibilities in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations:

Interment/Entombment:

$ Locate, prepare the site and complete the interment and entombment, participating in funeral proceedings as required:

$ Take all precautions to avoid damage to any grass areas and upright or flat markers;

$ Assist in routing funeral processions through the cemetery, ensuring that all approved interment/entombment/disinterment policies and procedures are carried out; and

$ Assist in locating and processing disinterment according to approved safety practices.

Maintenance:

$ Maintain all interment sites by topping up, levelling and grass seeding;

$ Maintain trees, flowers and shrub beds;

$Removes snow and ice from access roads, walkways and gravesites, using motorized snow-removal equipment and shovel; (as required)

$ Sand & salt roads; (as required)

$ Remove leaves, dead flowers, litter and debris from the cemetery;

$ Clean grounds in spring and connect water lines;

$ Fill pot holes and complete road repairs as necessary;

$ Level monuments, markers, foundations and accessories

$ Check all monuments for stability on an ongoing basis to ensure that there are no unsafe situations;

$ Rectify all unsafe situations

$ Notify the office of necessity for maintenance, repair and levelling;

$ Maintain all buildings and garage areas in a clean and organized condition;

$ Carry out housekeeping duties daily with major cleaning on a weekly basis at Our Lady of Charity Mausoleum;

$ Maintain all equipment by regularly inspecting equipment to ensure cleanliness and to establish and follow a preventive maintenance program in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications to prevent breakdowns and to save on costs. The exception would be for equipment that has a specific maintenance contract, (eg. backhoe); and

$ Complete minor repairs on cemetery mechanical equipment and report equipment defects to Senior Cemetery Operator.

General Duties:

$ Work with Senior Cemetery Operator to plan, develop and recommend for implementation new methods and procedures to improve operations;

$ Advise Senior Cemetery Operator immediately of any personal accidents/incidents or property damage;

$ Operate Cemetery equipment, and assist in training seasonal personnel in operation of equipment;

$ Conform to all applicable statutes, rules, laws and regulations (including Cemetery and Safety legislation);

$ Answer visitor’s questions; (as required);

$ Assist with cemetery mapping and inventory of graves; (as required)

$ Meet with potential purchasers and show available lots/plots; (as required)

$ Works with other Cemetery Staff to implement the overall goals of the cemetery and completes other duties as required, and as assigned by the Supervisor and in accordance with policies and guidelines of St. Andrew’s Cemetery;

$ Handles duties of Senior Cemetery Operator during his absence;

$ Must be appropriately dressed in presentable and clean work attire when dealing with the public and during funeral processions;

$ Performs such other duties as assigned by the Senior Cemetery Operator;

$ In the prolonged absence (5 consecutive working days or more) of the Senior Cemetery Operator you will have additional responsibilities in accordance with the Senior Cemetery Operator’s Contract. An appropriate bonus will be given when these occasions arise; and

$ Must have a good attendance record with minimal unscheduled absences.

Qualification Requirements:

$ To perform this job successfully and individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. $ Good health and adequate strength and endurance to perform the work described;

$ Verbal ability to communicate effectively with superiors and subordinates;

$ Able to represent the Roman Catholic Cemetery in a very professional and effective manner when dealing with the public, business representatives and funeral directors;

$ Able to carry out duties in an organized manner;

$ Numerical ability required to prepare estimates for new construction, repairs and maintenance and staking out for graves and foundations;

$ Ability to understand machinery and techniques to ensure safe, sanitary and effective operation of the grounds equipment and facilities;

$ Requires knowledge of the guideline for Christian Burial in the Catholic Church, Cemetery Decoration Rules and Regulations, and Cemetery Memorial Rules and Regulation;

$ Valid Ontario Driver’s Licence;

$ Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form; and

$ Ability to operate a backhoe, tractor, mower, hand trimmers and various other mechanical tools and hand tools as well as other equipment used in Cemetery operations.

Physical Job Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger; handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance.

The employee must occasionally lift and or move heavy objects. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, colour vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical equipment and in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to airborne particles or odours and vibration. The employee occasionally works in precarious places and is exposed to wet and or hot or extreme cold weather conditions.
