Employment Status: Temporary Full-Time for 1 year (CUPE 5348)
Hours: 35 hours per week
Location: Central branch

Do you have a passion for knowledge and excellent customer service skills? Oakville Public Library has seven library branches that are dedicated to serving the diverse community of Oakville. In this role, you’ll work within the Collection Development Department to catalogue library material and maintain library records to ensure ease of access for customers.

What you'll do
As a Cataloguer you will:

  • Create original MARC records in house for all formats according to established international cataloguing and classification principles, and local library practices
  • Copy catalogue material of all formats including descriptive cataloguing, assigning or validating subject and genre headings, classifying the item according to Dewey or fiction guidelines, applying authority control to names, subjects, and series headings
  • Review the vendor-supplied MARC records, edit, and add data according to established OPL material-specific procedures to provide optimum access to staff and customers
  • Upload digital-born issues to VITA (online archival database)
  • Index local newspaper articles and notices for birth, death and marriages for archival purposes using VITA Toolkit
  • Edit and maintain individual MARC records and item information
  • Participate in database cleanup and record maintenance projects, working with staff from other teams to troubleshoot and problem-solve as needed
  • Maintain a professional awareness of developments and current issues in the world of cataloguing and their implications for OPL cataloguing practices
  • Work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, other relevant health and safety legislation, and the Oakville Public Library’s Health & Safety Program
  • Assist with other duties as assigned

  • Experience with AACR2, RDA, LCSH, DDC, MARC Standards and MARC editing tools
  • Experience with an Integrated Library System (ILS) cataloguing module, Symphony experience considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of cataloguing tools such as BookWhere and OCLC Connexion

Your experience and educational background:

  • Library and Information Technician diploma with minimum 2 years library experience
