As a Forensic Identification Specialist, you will provide timely and high quality forensic services for the Calgary Police Service (CPS) as well as assisting Office of the Medical Examiner, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) and Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT). Primary duties include:
  • Conduct forensic examination of vehicles used in crime for all types of evidence including fingerprint examination of vehicle and contents, footwear impressions, DNA samples, and hair/ fibre recovery.
  • Assist sworn members with crime scene photographs, fingerprint and DNA collection.
  • Conduct forensic examination of exhibits collected by police investigator and forensics at crime scenes that are submitted to the CPS Forensic Centre.
  • Obtain fingerprint impressions from and identify deceased individuals by attending city mortuary and obtaining fingerprints from human remains.
  • Complete reports for the Crown and Prosecutor to be presented in court.
  • Assist with training new members to Forensic Crime Scenes Unit (FCSU).
Working Conditions

Exposure to biohazards on a regular basis. This position will be required to bend, kneel, carry, climb, stand, walk, lift up to 50lbs, push and pull awkward objects. This position will be involved in activities requiring coordination of movements and may involve working in confined spaces.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Forensics, Criminal justice or equivalent and 1 year experience in a laboratory related environment or policing environment.
  • The successful candidate must be eligible to obtain designation as a Community Peace Officer Level 2 and expected to attend and pass the following:
    • Understudy program (4 months); an in-house program designed to be incorporated into onsite training. Designed to provide the fundamentals of policy, process and techniques of Calgary Police Forensic Identification Specialists.
    • 9 week Forensic Identification Course (FIC) at either the Canadian Police College or an equivalent. Travel is required for this course.
    • Canadian Firearms Safety course.
    • Annual and ongoing training and assessments related to the forensic discipline.
  • Basic knowledge of the legal system including specific knowledge of case law, policy and legislation related to disclosure and legal requirements.
  • Coaching and development, communication, efficiency and thoroughness, planning and prioritizing/visionary; relationship building, self-confidence, and service orientation.
Pre-employment Requirements
  • An enhanced security clearance and pre-employment polygraph will be conducted.
  • Applicants will be tested for appropriate skills.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
