Job description:
Position Purpose summary:
This position assists the Facilities Manager to ensure modern and automated building systems are managed with reflective records, training, and support. The incumbent participates in site-wide coordination of effort respecting asset management, preventative maintenance, and business continuity. Provides upkeep, regular and preventative maintenance of all Edmonton Centre of Hope (ECOH) facilities across the city. The Assistant Facilities Manager is a position with limited supervision.
The incumbent may provide direction, establish priorities, assign tasks, coordinate work projects with the Lead Maintenance Workers, Maintenance Workers, and Custodians. The Assistant Facilities Manager is required to bring specialized technical knowledge forward to assist in the creation of maintenance plans and projects.
Accountabilities:
Supervisory Duties
- Provide onsite support and training to the Maintenance team regarding the Building Management System (BMS).
- Provide onsite support and training to all staff in ECOH with respect to security and access systems and manage all automated systems.
- Research and recommend vendors to the Facilities Manager for site-wide contracts.
- Perform preventative maintenance in accordance with schedule.
- Perform all routine and preventative maintenance work on all equipment, devices, and furnishings.
- Record work as required by government agencies and the Salvation Army.
- Perform all Facilities Manager duties in the absence of the Facilities Manager, including but not limited to workforce supervision, payroll, asset management.
- Perform all the duties of the Lead Maintenance Worker in the absence of a Lead Maintenance Worker at any site.
- Participate in any evaluation of Maintenance staff and ensure that ongoing review and improvement is the standard.
- Assist with government and contract inspections related to fire systems, elevators, boiler, building inspections, security system, etc.
- Assist the Facilities Manager in managing vendors and contracted work.
- Assist in the planning of maintenance work in consultation with the Facilities Manager.
- Assist in the ordering of supplies and tools in consultation with the Facilities Manager.
- Assist in the training and evaluation of Maintenance staff as directed by the Facilities Manager to ensure that ongoing review and improvement is the standard.
Regular & Preventative Maintenance:
- Ensure that all facilities are maintained in good repair, meeting all Health & Safety regulations based on preventative maintenance schedule.
- Perform repairs in an efficient and financially responsible manner,
- Maintain all equipment in good working order.
- Follow up on all Maintenance Request Work Orders daily or as per schedule.
- Complete all routine repairs.
- Assist the Facilities Manager in completing monthly preventative maintenance and safety checks ensuring that emergency lights are operational including fire door closures and stairwells are clear of debris, etc.
- Ensure all exhaust fans are operational and serviced regularly.
- Complete repairs and renovations as qualified to do and directed.
- Coordinate outside contractors as assigned or delegated by the Facilities Manager.
- Ensure exterior of buildings are kept clean & tidy – this may include sweeping, snow shoveling, garbage pickup and window washing.
- Coordinate the transportation and arrangement of furniture, equipment, boxes, and other heavy items as required.
- Other work-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education requirements:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of two academic years
- Power Engineer Certificate
- Current certification in First Aid/CPR
- WHMIS training
- Must have a valid Driver’s License and Clean Driver’s Abstract
- Must be able to provide an acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
- An alternative combination of education and experience may be considered
Experience:
- A minimum of 3 years of related experience
- A minimum 1-year building maintenance experience in a supervisory capacity
- Experience with building automation systems and geothermal systems
- Experience managing security and access systems
- Basic knowledge of electrical, carpentry and plumbing works
- Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army – its mission, culture, and values
Required Skills/Knowledge:
- Intermediate or advanced understanding of automation systems: building, security, etc.
- Ability to read and comprehend instructional manuals for assembling and installation of equipment, furniture and performing preventive maintenance
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Reliability and punctuality are essential
- Able to work in a fast-paced environment and multi-task few projects effectively
- Effective organizational and time management skills
Successful candidates will be required to provide:
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
DAYS and HOURS of work: 80 hours bi-weekly as set by Manager
