PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Algoma University Thunderbird Women’s Basketball Program is looking for a new Head Coach to continue to lead the program’s growth toward success. Having joined the OUA and U-Sports leagues from the OCAA in 2013, this program has continued to grow and improve each year. Thunderbird Athletics is now looking for a coach to take the program to the next level of sustained success.

This is a full-time contract position with Thunderbird Athletics. The Head Coach will provide leadership to the Women's Basketball program through the duties of recruitment, training, coaching, administrative, and public relations required in organizing a competitive and successful team. As the coach will be working with student athletes, they will focus on academic success by implementing and supporting best practices in coordination with University departments. In addition, the Head Coach will assist with the development of relationships with basketball alumni and the basketball community. This will include being involved in community basketball programs, such as the Junior Thunderbird program. The position requires that the incumbent have values consistent with the high standards of Algoma
University and will ensure compliance with the spirit and intent of OUA/U-Sports rules and regulations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the Director of Student Life and Ancillary Services, the Head Coach will have several areas of responsibility, including but not limited to the following:

● Coaching duties, including leading, developing, evaluating, and preparing the student athletes for successful competition.

● Promoting the academic success of student athletes by working in coordination with University academic supports and ensuring athletes are focused on their academic studies.

● Ensure athlete participation in wellness programs in coordination with the Student
Athlete and Varsity Services Coordinator such as Strength and Conditioning,
Sport Psychology, and any necessary Athlete Therapy.

● Identification and recruitment of quality student athletes.
● Maintaining effective communications and administrative teamwork amongst coaches, players, and athletic staff.
● Complete adherence and compliance to and support OUA, U-Sport, and Algoma University policies and procedures.
● Develop and implement both an in-season and off-season training program for athletes.
● Ensure compliance with doctor and therapist recommendations on student-athlete health and their participation in sports.
● Train, supervise, and mentor assistant coaching staff.
● Responsible for coordinating team travel, equipment inventory, securing training facilities, and other team functions in coordination with the Athletics Operations
Coordinator.

● Attend required association sports meetings.
● Provide required reports to the Director as part of the budget planning process.
● Implement provincial development programs when possible.
● Be an active member of the local basketball community through programs such as the Junior Thunderbirds, school visits, camps, leagues, and development programs.

● Delivery of Algoma Thunderbird basketball-related programming such as camps, tournaments, and school visits.

● Provide input on overall department direction, resource allocation, and annual planning.

● Uphold the values of Algoma University including the Seven Grandfather
Teachings in all interactions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

● Minimum five (5) years of coaching experience, preferably as a Head Coach.
● Coaching certifications (ex. NCCP) an asset.
● Knowledge of best practices in student athlete development.
● Demonstrated success as a coach.
● Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
● Ability to motivate athletes, and a commitment to fair play.
● Good administrative skills and a demonstrated ability to balance multiple role functions.
● Ability to work flexible hours and travel as required.

● Commitment to understanding Algoma University’s Special Mission and the Seven
Grandfather Teachings.

● Vulnerable Sector Police Check will be required.
