This posting is to fill one permanent, full-time position in Dawson City and one 2-year full-time, term position with location options within the Yukon, working 75 hours bi-weekly.

The Transportation Aviation Branch (TAB) is responsible for the management, development, and maintenance of the Yukon Territory Aviation System, which includes the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport (ENWIA), four community airports and 24 aerodromes. Driven by a commitment to safety and security, efficient and effective programming, and progressive leadership, TAB is a dedicated and professional team.

The Community Airports Duty Managers are key members of TAB’s Community Airports team and proactively manage airside developments and operations for Dawson City, Mayo, Old Crow and Watson Lake Airports. This position also involves coordinating activities at the 24 aerodromes operated by the Government of Yukon.

The Community Airports Duty Managers act as the program Authority on behalf of Nav Canada for the eight CARS (Community Aerodrome Radio Station) in the Yukon. This includes:

  • Reviewing and analysing inspection/audit reports and performance indicators;
  • Conducting site inspections and identifying deficiencies;
  • Developing and implementing Observer Communicator on-the-job training, refresher training and certification;
  • Developing, maintaining and implementing the CARS Local Station Procedures manual;
  • Managing service contracts and procurements for the program.

This position involves collaborating closely with TAB team members, other government departments, regulators, carriers and community stakeholders to ensure a safe and efficient air transportation system. TAB seeks two collaborative and progressive leaders interested in a unique opportunity to develop and manage the day-to-day operation of airports and aerodromes in an assigned region of the Yukon.

Essential Qualifications (what we’re looking for in your resume):

  • Training or post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate in subjects such as Aviation Management, Business Administration or Safety Administration.
  • Experience critically reviewing, writing precisely and systematically implementing operations manuals and procedures.
  • Experience conducting site inspections.
  • Experience proactively and productively collaborating with a wide audience of stakeholders and members of the general public.
  • Experience driving on airside, communicating on radios, and working in an airport environment (asset).
  • NAV CANADA Observer Communicator or Flight Service Specialist training and experience (asset).
  • Accredited Airport Executive (A.A.E), Accredited Airport Professional (A.A.P) or equivalent (asset).

Conditions of Employment

  • Possess and maintain a valid Yukon Class 5 Driver’s Licence or higher qualification (upon hire).
  • Acquire and maintain a YG Airside Vehicle Operator Permit (within 4 months of hire).
  • Applicants not qualified as an Observer Communicator will be required to complete the Observer Communicator Program as directed by NAV CANADA. This requires nine weeks’ paid training at Aurora College in Fort Smith, NWT (within 6 months of hire).
  • Acquire and maintain a Transport Canada Aerodrome Security Clearance (within 8 months of hire).

Job Requirements

  • Overnight travel by road throughout the Yukon in various weather conditions, approximately one week every two months.
  • Occasional travel by small aircraft.
