To develop, plan, organize, direct, implement and participate in the Activity Program of Lakeview Manor. To ensure that comprehensive activity programs are provided to meet the needs of the residents (including cultural, mental, emotional, recreational, social, spiritual, educational and physical). Programming is adapted to promote resident’s involvement, and is consistent with the philosophy and mission of the Manor. The Activity Coordinator also directs the Volunteer Program of the Manor.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collects information on each resident’s capacity and limitations; assesses resident’s interest in activities through consultation with resident and/or family; maintains residents’ attendance records to report each resident’s participation and progress within the Activity program (daily, monthly and annually) and provides regular and special reports as required.
  • Plans, develops, coordinates, organizes and evaluates responses to individual and group activities which provide an atmosphere of mental and physical stimulation within the limitations of the individuals and groups.
  • Monitors response to, and adapts Activity Program to promote and maximize residents’ involvement.
  • Conducts or coordinates group exercise programs.
  • Contacts community agencies and organizes various social, recreational and educational programs for the residents.
  • Organizes outing programs for the residents which may include shopping, entertainment, social activities and visits to various places of interest.
  • Provides personal hygiene during outings for residents.
  • Operates the Nursing Home passenger vehicles such as the van, bus or car.
  • Demonstrates an awareness and supports individual resident care plans, goals and objectives as identified by staff from professional disciplines.
  • Ensures that residents are transported to and from activities, such as pushing wheelchairs and assisting in walking, and may participate in Chapel-related activities.
  • Assists with feeding of residents at meal times as required.
  • Arranges, conducts and maintains minutes of regular Resident and Family Council Meetings.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings by providing information and ensuring follow-up of recommendations.
  • Schedules, monitors and provides direction to Activity Program volunteers and students on the day-to-day operation of Activity programs and events for residents.
  • Sets goals and objectives, and evaluates feedback to assess the residents’, staff and family satisfaction with the Activity Program.
  • Ensures that the provincial and organization’s standards are set and maintained.
  • Maintains an inventory control system for Activity supplies and equipment; recommends and/or obtains approval to purchase equipment, supplies or other items for residents.
  • Makes recommendations and/or obtains approval to purchase equipment and supplies or other items for residents and any alterations of physical facilities for the Activity Program.
  • Maintains a neat and tidy work area.
  • Initiates and participates in fundraising to support the Activity Program.

Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of Lakeview Manor’s: philosophy, mission, policies and procedures, and conducts work in a manner consistent with this;
  • Participates in LVM’s continuous quality improvement initiatives to improve resident, staff, department and facility performance outcomes;
  • Utilizes the facility’s resources, such as supplies and equipment, economically and safely;
  • Develops and maintains good interpersonal and communication skills and utilizes these skills in work with residents, families, volunteers, visitors and other staff;
  • Maintains resident confidentiality and respects the resident’s right to privacy;
  • Participates in department meetings, attends in-service education, staff, and committee meetings.
  • Communicates with residents, team members, families, volunteers and community members regarding Activity events.
  • Develops an active Volunteer Program which includes recruiting, selection, orientation, training, evaluation, and supervision of volunteers with ongoing evaluation and coordination of volunteer activities.

Individual Responsibilities:

  • Practices and adheres to all safety and sanitation rules and regulations, and observes personal hygiene.
  • Maintains knowledge of, and applies: policies and procedures the Fire and Disaster Plan; the Infection Control & Back in Form programs, and any other site programs.
  • Reports need of repairs to supervisor, or informs Maintenance personnel using approved communication tools.
  • Has a thorough knowledge of, and is able to demonstrate, the safe use and care of supplies and assigned equipment.
  • Maintains professional and personal development through participation in continuous education programs, in-services and other initiatives.
  • Creates an inviting and comfortable, safe and clean environment for residents, volunteers and visitors.
  • Adheres to WorkSafe NB Acts & Regulations in all aspects of duties.

Related and allied duties will be assigned from time to time as may become necessary to the operation of the facility.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school graduation or equivalent, plus an additional Activity Director Course of up to six months or equivalent.
  • Initiative, good communication skills, good judgment and organizational abilities and able to work independently and through others.
  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions in English.
  • Good attendance record.
  • Must possess a Class 4 Driver’s license, or be willing to obtain it.
  • Must be flexible and easily adaptable to change.
  • Able to supervise volunteers and students.

Working Conditions: Full Time - 75 hours bi-weekly
