The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Specialist, Mine Project to join our Projects team in Sudbury. This is a permanent position.

The purpose of the role is to continuously enhance the NA Studies group's mining capability such that health, safety standards and legislated requirements are effectively satisfied while applying innovations and strategies to maintain a competitive edge for the business.

This role functions as a senior mining leader in providing specialized technical expertise to Vale's NA Studies group in the evaluation of mining studies.

This role is responsible for coordinating overall engineering and design matters on a project or multiple projects. This includes the review of and recommendations regarding all mine engineering solutions. The projects include FEL 3 studies and execution. They are responsible to support their respective project leads from a technical mine design perspective and coordinate with relevant internal stakeholders to ensure strategic and tactical initiatives are embedded into the studies.

This role adds value by providing extensive knowledge and a disciplined approach in the functional area of mining methods/design to recommend improvements that positively impact the safety, health, and business performance. This result is achieved by working with the operating sites and the base metals mining team, and the various consulting firms.

This role will also look after miscellaneous administrative duties.

Health, Safety and Environment

  • Leads and actively promotes behaviors with Vale's safety goals for all stakeholders including employees, contractors, customers, and members of the community.
  • Accountable for achieving zero harm by participating in the design of safe working systems, site inspections and safety interactions in their project area and ensuring all follow-up actions are carried out.
  • Promotes a healthy working environment.

People

  • Educates peers on the SPE deliverables.
  • Influences project team members performance and influences their activities as necessary to ensure project requirements are achieved.
  • Communicates regularly with the Project team on strategies to ensure that goals and priorities are clearly understood.
  • Recommends to the Manager, any requirements for additional resources and strategies to maintain the schedule.

Leadership

  • Leads the engineering input including in project review for the project maturity assessments and ensures follow-up actions are completed.
  • Interfaces with other members of the Project Team and contractors to ensure no aspect of the project is overlooked or lags in progress and assists in the development and implementation of recovery plans.
  • Leads, co-ordinates and monitors studies and contractors within their responsible area to ensure project requirements are achieved.

Outcomes

  • Responsible for review and delivery of engineering for the FEL 3 studies as agreed by the Manager, taking into consideration the full project lifecycle.
  • Manages and ensures compliance to project procedures including the management of project documentation and ensuring these are received, reviewed, commented, responded, and incorporated in project archives.
  • Manages and coordinates the outputs of their assigned project team or teams in line with the detailed scope, cost, and schedule control baselines and manages any project changes in terms of this agreed baseline.
  • Mitigates project delays by coordinating the different functions and establishing priorities.
  • Ensures measurement of progress on all contracts for reporting progress to the Manager, Project Engineering and broader team as required.
  • Ensures scope forecast of cost and schedule is updated as prescribed by the project requirements.
  • Ensures all trade-offs and engineering is delivered to required standards.
  • Provide technical advice to projects and operations for the support and evaluation of open pit mining method selection including mine design, optimization, and scheduling support.
  • Leverage innovative concepts and applications for use in Vale Base Metals operations from Vale's internal agencies, operations, and other Vale groups of companies (iron ore, fertilizers, coal) and facilitate the use of best practices.

About You

Education:

  • Bachelor (or equivalent) of mining Engineering or Engineering Technologist Certification with 20+ year of experience in appropriate discipline
  • P. Eng, Chartered Engineer or home country equivalent is preferred.

Skills and Experience:

  • Unwavering commitment to safety
  • Experience in managing FEL 3 level studies.
  • Experience in Base Metals
  • A strong understanding of requirements to support mine development and production operations.
  • Strong communication skills and development of concise documents and presentation materials.
  • Be creative, not only use past practices but promote new ways of doing things in order to maximize the value of our mineral resources.
  • Substantial experience working onsite.
  • Ability to present detailed and complicated concepts and information succinctly.
  • Ability to evaluate alternative options and recommend preferred solution while outlining benefits and downside risks.
  • Flexibility for domestic and international travel.

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Experience with playing a key role in pre-feasibility and feasibility studies.
  • Experience with mine operations.
  • Experience with various commodities.
  • PMP qualification
