Job Overview

We are seeking a bright and well-rounded Legal Counsel to support our expanding team of dedicated and hardworking individuals. As part of the SNDL team, you will work closely with our internal and external lawyers and directly with our business stakeholders. You will report to the General Counsel and be involved in supporting all aspects of supporting a growing and dynamic business.

Scope of Role

· Providing legal advice and performing legal work in the areas of: corporate/commercial, securities, M&A, corporate governance, cannabis and liquor regulatory, employment/labour, franchising and leasing.

· Oversee and manage external counsel on litigation matters.

· Providing timely, proactive and solution-oriented legal advice to all business units.

· Ensuring external legal support is appropriately retained and managed by identifying necessary budget requirements for the provision of external legal services and appropriately managing external legal expenses.

· Developing, implementing and reviewing the Legal Department’s processes to ensure compliance with policies and standards, while ensuring mitigation of risks.

· Carrying out legal research as required.

· Demonstrating a high performance, highly disciplined, independent, achievement-oriented, business solutions manner of working.

Knowledge and Experience

· A member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario or the Law Society of Alberta

· 3-5 years post-call experience obtained in-house or in private practice

Required Competencies

· An LLB, JD or equivalent from recognized university

· Strong verbal and written communication skills and an established record of providing proactive, business friendly advice with a focus on adding value.

· Excellent interpersonal skills that allow you to work with business partners to achieve results.

· Ability to be proactive, problem solve as well as organize (yourself and others) will be paramount. The ideal candidate will be able to prioritize workload, be self-motivated, have strong attention to detail, demonstrate strong work ethic, manage multiple priorities, and deliver on required tasks with accuracy and precision.

· Strong interest in, knowledge of and passion for, the cannabis and liquor industry is an asset.

· Ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced, changing environment while organizing and managing multiple responsibilities and projects with competing priorities and deadlines.

· Forward thinking with respect to identifying, assessing and prioritizing risks, issues and challenges.

· Strong drafting and proofreading skills coupled with excellent written and oral communication skills.

· High degree of personal ethics, integrity and responsibility with an ability to deal with sensitive issues and safeguard confidential information.

· A positive attitude with excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and across all levels of the organization.
