Stewardship & Outreach Assistant (Summer Student)

Terms of Employment: Temporary - 16-week contract, 30 hours per week. Applicants must be under 30 years of age (this is a Canada Summer Jobs funded position) at the beginning of the contract.
Wage: $19/hour
Location: Flexible within the Kootenay Lake Area, British Columbia.
Start date: early May, 2023 – as soon as possible

About Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society:
The Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society’s (FOKLSS) mission is to improve the health and stewardship of Kootenay Lake through monitoring, habitat restoration, capacity building and the empowerment of local communities and stakeholders.

FOKLSS achieves excellence in stewardship through collaboration and evidence-based decision-making in its project development and management. FOKLSS works to develop community participation, passion and pride in lake stewardship and provides a voice for the lake’s stewardship community to regional and international management and governance bodies.

Job Description:
The Stewardship & Outreach Assistant will support education, outreach, monitoring, and project implementation under the supervision of the Stewardship Coordinator with support from the Executive

Director. The chosen candidate will participate in osprey monitoring, water monitoring, project planning, data entry and analysis, research, reporting, beach cleanups and outreach at local markets and festivals. The Stewardship Assistant will also support social media management and online outreach, volunteer engagement and community partner communications.

The position requires the Stewardship & Outreach Assistant to have access to a reliable vehicle. Travel for work purposes is remunerated. The applicant must be able to work flexible hours (evenings and weekends, when needed, on a somewhat regular basis).

Requirements:

Education: Have obtained or are currently pursuing a diploma or degree in environmental sciences or a related field.

Experience: Candidates must have a minimum 1-year of experience working in an environmental or related field. Preference will be given to candidates with skills in social media management and documented experience in community engagement and outreach, facilitation, water stewardship, local knowledge.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong communication and engagement skills including public speaking, professional use of email, and the coordination of groups at events or field days.
  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills.
  • Experience using social media tools such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and

Mailchimp to promote events and share information.

  • Excellent data collection skills with experience using mobile data collection software.
  • Capable of completing assigned tasks on time and with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, solving problems as they arise.
  • Class 5 driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Criminal record check
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1
