Position Overview

Facilities Management is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Assistant Shift Engineer.

The Central Power Plant is a First Class Power Plant (15 MW Electrical/40 Megawatt thermal), operated under the Alberta Labour Safety Codes Act. The CHCP operates and is staffed 24-hours per day, on a year round basis. The unit is responsible to operate, supervise and maintain the primary power plant, cooling equipment, the utility tunnel system, and the Bow River Pumping Station and associated piping, to provide a continuous, uninterrupted supply of utilities to all buildings on campus. The Assistant Shift Engineer operates under the direct supervision and guidance of the Shift Engineer. Work is generally routine and low stress, however, in an emergency high stress will result from demands to function quickly and effectively, both physically and mentally.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • The Assistant Shift Engineer performs regular checks on equipment operations, and makes any necessary adjustments or corrections as required; carries out preventive maintenance as well as emergency repairs; and maintains all necessary records
  • Ensures that required records and logs are maintained
  • Ensures that safety standards required by the Alberta Boilers Safety Association and Occupational Health and Safety are adhered to within the plant
  • Ensures that any emergency or dangerous condition that develops with any plant equipment is dealt with quickly and safely, by performing emergency shutdown, isolation, and lockout procedures in conjunction with the Shift Engineer. May be required to take action independently in an emergency
  • Ensures that any emergency repairs made are done safely, and in accordance with requirements of the Alberta Boilers Safety Association
  • Ensures that any plant operating emergencies or equipment deficiencies are immediately reported to the Shift Engineer

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Must hold a valid Third Class Certificate of Competency in Power Engineering issued by the Alberta Boilers Safety Association. Candidates who have passed 2 tests towards obtaining Third Class ticket and who qualify for a temporary Third Class Certificate as per Alberta Boilers Safety Association regulations will be taken into consideration
  • Must be physically able to lift heavy weights, work in confined, noisy and hot environments, be able to tolerate dust, grease and chemicals, be able to visually inspect equipment in varying levels of light; be able to monitor equipment operation by listening to sounds equipment produces; and, must be able to use hand tools
  • An intermediate knowledge of equipment operating principles including gas turbines, gas compressor and high temp hot water boilers
  • Must possess good communication skills, both in person and in writing
  • Must demonstrate good organizational and decision-making skills
  • Must be able and comfortable working in a team environment as a positive contributing team member
  • Must hold a valid Class 5 Alberta Vehicle Operator (non GDL) Licence
  • Completion of a Power Engineering Technologist Diploma or equivalent is an asset
