ABOUT THE ROLE


We are growing our TransAlta team in Calgary, Alberta! We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic, and personable individual to join our Canadian Growth group.


This position is an integral player on the Canadian Growth team and will interact internally with corporate groups such as: Land, Insurance, Accounting, Construction, and Legal.


This permanent full-time salaried position is based out of our office in Calgary, Alberta with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.


WHAT YOU WILL DO


As the Senior Environmental and Permitting Planner, Canadian Growth, you will:


  • Prepare permit and environmental management plans for new power plant construction projects
  • Ensure environmental compliance, due-diligence, environmental protection, analysis, monitoring, and reporting for new power generation projects, following regulatory processes, policies, and procedures
  • Provide regulatory assessment and due diligence reviews of proposed mergers and acquisitions for environmental and permitting aspects of projects
  • Manage environmental consultants conducting pre-construction baseline studies and air emission and noise modeling for new power plants, review consultant work and manage consulting budgets
  • Foster a safe-working and environmental culture of excellence while adhering to safe work practices, procedures, standards and policies and train staff on health, safety and environmental management systems and processes
  • Monitor any environmental regulatory changes that affect growth and operations and incorporate them into standards and policies
  • Deliver all environmental permits, including acquiring new permits and obtaining approval for renewals or amendments as necessary
  • Maintain strong relationships and information exchange with local, provincial, and federal regulators, consultants, and stakeholders to ensure construction plans are consistent with regulatory requirements and site constraints
  • Work closely with TransAlta’s Public Consultation and Aboriginal Consultation teams to provide project information and representation at public meetings, hearings, and open houses
  • Conduct and assist in incident response, recommendation and implementation of corrective actions, and development of mitigation strategies
  • Represent TransAlta on various government and industry working groups


WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU


To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following must-have qualifications and experience:


  • B.Sc. in Environmental Sciences or equivalent (EP designation preferred)
  • Minimum 10 years of experience as an environmental professional, preferably in the power business
  • Strong understanding of regulations related to thermal plant operations
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision
  • Desire to learn new skills and gain diverse competencies
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Proficient in MS Project or Primavera, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Demonstrated knowledge of power plant environmental issues
  • Demonstrated skill in project management, negotiation, and strategic planning
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for: presentations, reports, regulatory filings, and proposals

  • Ability to travel
  • Valid driver's license
