The University of Regina is hiring a Research Partnerships Officer to lead the development of research partnerships. You would excel in this position if you’re motivated by a fast-paced, collaborative, entrepreneurial, inclusive work environment and enjoy being part of a team.

Reporting to the Associate Vice-President (Research), the successful candidate will be have a strong understanding of research in academia and industry, University policies, and have the skills to maintain an extensive range of relationships within and outside the University. The candidate will need to understand why industry partners fund academic research and be able to position the value of academic research within a partner’s operational requirements. The candidate will also understand common challenges in academic-industry partnerships and be able to negotiate with the partner to establish a mutually beneficial partnership arrangement.
The position will entail tasks such as: meeting one-on-one with partners; lead group discussions with partners and faculty; drafting and editing proposals; negotiating template agreements; communicating the roles and responsibilities of the project to various team members.

Responsibilities / Accountabilities:
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with external partners in support of all Faculties;
  • Pro-actively target sectors or organizations where there is high potential for funded research;
  • Work closely with faculty members to connect research interests to external partner interests and needs;
  • Coordinate the participation of external partners in preparing grant proposals and securing the appropriate partnership agreements;
  • Initiate the negotiation of the terms and conditions of research contracts from template agreements;
  • Coordinate and deliver presentations to potential partners and at events to advance the visibility and research profile of the University;
  • Collaborate with team members in other areas of the Research Office and at other University Offices;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice-President (Research)
Position Requirements
Position Requirements:
  • Undergraduate degree combined with a minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience in contract review and negotiation;
  • Strong relationship management and project management experience;
  • Familiarity with academic research environment;
  • Experience working with confidential and sensitive information;
  • Knowledge and experience in contract and/or intellectual property law would be an asset;
  • Knowledge of legal agreements, especially those used in University research settings such as NDAs, MTAs, research contracts, etc;
  • Familiarity with, and ability to understand, complex legal language;
  • Knowledge of University research environment, including federal and provincial research programs and policies;
  • Knowledge of Intellectual Property and commercialization practices;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-performance culture;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Outgoing personality with relationship management skills, including success working in a diverse team and maintaining a large network of contacts;
  • Excellent oral and written communication with the ability to discuss complex information to various audiences and in varied formats;
  • Demonstrated capacity for negotiation, and conflict resolution;
  • Flexibility, initiative, creativity, attention to detail, and comfort with ambiguity;
  • Strong computer skills including the ability to work with a broad range of internal and external information system tools and electronic processing systems;
  • Demonstrated proactive leadership skills, strong project- and time-management skills and prioritize numerous projects and tasks;
  • Ability to promote the strategic research objectives and policies of the University to external partners and position it within the objectives of those partners.
