The Canadian Research Institute for Food Safety (CRIFS) at the University of Guelph (Canada) is seeking applicants for one (1) Research Assistant position.

Research Assistant_WW (1 year position, with possibility of renewal)

We are seeking a highly motivated Microbiology and/or Molecular Biologist who will be involved in performing molecular assays and Next Generation Sequencing, as part of the Ontario Wastewater Surveillance Initiative which is a collaborative project involving microbiologists, genomics specialists and epidemiologists, and public health officials who are conducting COVID-19 surveillance in wastewater to understand disease transmission.

Key Responsibilities:

--Independently performs nucleic acid extraction from a variety of samples including environmental and human specimens, nucleic acid quantification, PCR amplification, qRT-PCR, and library preparation for next-generation sequencing following established SOPs.

- Analyze and upload data to databases, and prepare reports and manuscripts for publication, as well as attending meetings as required.

- Ensures laboratory areas are clean and well-organized.

- Applies general technical knowledge and skills to perform routine, standardized laboratory research techniques and procedures.

- Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Knowledge and Skills: Previous laboratory experience is also a must, specifically performing PCR and qPCR. NGS sequencing experience is an asset.

Education and Experience: The successful applicant will have a B.Sc. in biology, biochemistry or related field. MSc degree is required. Experience working with complex samples is an asset.

Attributes and Competencies: The successful applicant will have excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to troubleshoot computational processes and provide meaningful biological interpretation of PCR/qRT-PCR data. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, excellent organizational and excellent oral and written communication skills to discuss results with scientific professionals. Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with others in a team environment, especially within a multi-disciplinary team. A high Level of personal and professional integrity.
