Reporting to the Territorial Manager Environmental Health, the Regional Environmental Health Officer provides direct delivery of environmental health services and programs designed to control factors in the human environment that adversely affect people’s health in Nunavut. The Officer also develops, implements, and maintains Environmental Health Programs and tobacco control measures designed to ensure that public health hazards are identified, evaluated, and corrected.

The Regional Environmental Health Officer, a critical component of the Public Health System, provides a broad spectrum of public health functions including health protection, disease and injury prevention, health surveillance, population health assessment and health promotion. The Officer provides consultative services to individuals, health facility staff as well as federal, territorial and municipal governments and non-governmental organizations throughout Nunavut, for environmental issues affecting human health. The Officer advocates for the public health and safety interests of all citizens across Nunavut and uses critical thinking skills and background knowledge, theory and education to determine risk and direct appropriate recommendation.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through an undergraduate degree from a recognized University in the Environmental Health field as well as certification by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors. Two (2) years’ of related experience in the Environmental Health field is also required along with Class 5 driver’s license and the ability to operate as a Peace Officer in accordance with section 22 of the Public Health Act.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut (Inuinnaqtun), English and French. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official language is an asset. Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
