Operations Manager at the Bamfield Marine Station

Against the beautiful backdrop of a dynamic and nationally leading marine biology station in the Pacific Northwest, the Operations Manager leads and supports the day-to-day provision of the Bamfield Marine Science Centre’s (BMSC) operational units, building systems and facility infrastructure. The Operations Manager supports the BMSC's long-term goals, strategic plans and organizational change; and is committed to innovative and evolving programs and services in support of students and marine biology research

OBJECTIVES:

Oversee and/or manage the following departments as appropriate (~ 15 staff) : Facilities and Maintenance, Housing Services, Food Services, Foreshore Operations, Diving and Safety

  • Actively contribute to the strategic and campus development plan of the BMSC.
  • Lead the maintenance and sustainability of facilities and operational services.
  • Work closely with the senior managers.
  • Work closely with the Managing Director to support staff.
  • Ensure that BMSC is compliant with regulatory and licencing requirements
  • Staff operations and implement/amend work schedules
  • Ensure safety procedures are followed and that incidents are reported
  • Monitor the annual budget and address any variances.
  • Monitor capital projects and coordinate with contractors

Leadership

  • Develop and sustain practices that enhance staff engagement and motivation.
  • Regularly inform and communicate BMSC developments to staff
  • Engage staff and actively seek their input as appropriate
  • Demonstrate to staff how their work links to the BMSC's strategic plan.
  • Regularly update staff on important initiatives
  • Ability to represent the Managing Director and/or Director with external agencies

Education

  • Four years related professional experience
  • Post-Secondary training in an Engineering, Maintenance or related field preferred
  • Completion or willingness to obtain health and safety training an asset.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
  • Project Management experience
  • Experience in operations & capital asset management.
  • Non-Profit or Public Sector experience preferred.

  • Excellent written and oral comprehension and expression.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently, as required.
  • Exceptional customer service focus.
  • Demonstrated initiative, creativity, and integrity.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask, prioritize and problem solve.
  • Experience working in a remote setting, an asset.
  • Criminal records check.
  • Valid Drivers licence

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: $67,741.00-$89,208.00 per year
