About the Role

Reporting to the Vice President of Human Resources, we are looking for an Operational HR Manager to join our HR team in the Edmonton, AB corporate office. The Operational HR Manager will liaise regularly with business leaders and will manage a team of skilled HR Business Partners and HR Generalists who support HR Operations for a designated client group within our retail liquor stores, retail cannabis stores, warehouses and cannabis grow-op facilities. Our HR team acts as a true partner to the business, with a focus on producing quality solutions that are compliant and follow best practice, while ensuring the needs of our core operations are top-of-mind. In this role, you will work alongside a Functional HR Manager who leads a team of specialists that manage SNDL’s core HR functions outside of HR operations, such as training and development, policy, total rewards, recruitment, etc.

The ideal candidate for the Operational HR Manager role will possess 4-5+ years of HR managerial or leadership experience and brings an in-depth understanding of best practice in employee relations, performance management, and workplace investigations. The right individual for this role will have prior experience leading and developing a strong HR team and isn’t afraid to ask questions or be ‘in the trenches’ when it comes to ensuring team success. Role and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide leadership to the HRBP and HR Generalist team and facilitate activities that will build and enhance employee trust, communication, engagement, growth, and retention.
  • Responsible for coaching and performance management of a growing team of up to 8 (approximate) HRBP’s and HR Generalists located across multiple provinces.
  • Establish clear responsibilities and expectations on tasks and projects, with planned follow-up on your teams’ deliverables, including your own, by using a project management mindset to foster accountability and high quality output.
  • Learn and understand the similarities and nuances within the industry and overall business operations across our retail, warehousing/facility, and the corporate offices to help instill consistent practices across the HR team where needed, while also building your awareness of when different strategy and approach is necessary.
  • Build relationships and partner with leaders to align HR practices and initiatives to business needs.
  • Foster team building, open-door communication, and keep your team informed of large-scale business changes.
  • Partner with the Functional HR Manager to build effective project teams and foster collaboration within your teams to act as strategic partners in the fulfillment of business objectives.
  • Learn and help direct staff to appropriate resources related to programs and processes managed under the functional HR group, including the group benefit plan, total rewards programs, recruitment and training expectations, etc.
  • Support the HRBP team, directly or indirectly, with conducting workplace investigations and making recommendations for the business.
  • Ensure HRBP recommendations for employee matters, offer leaders options that are comprehensive and meet business objectives, while also mitigating risk.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and facilitation support to senior leaders for performance management or termination needs within the corporate offices, notably those that may be of high sensitivity or high risk.
  • Support the HRBP team and business leaders, directly or indirectly, by providing information, best practice, and assistance with difficult or complex employee relations matters, including mediation, coaching, progressive discipline, leaves management, suspensions, investigations, and terminations.
  • Provide direction to the HR team and leaders on the design, goal development, and execution of the performance review process.
  • In collaboration with internal or external legal counsel, participate in and review formal response to legal claims, including complaints to Employment Standards, Human Rights, or provincial HSE officers.
  • Identify and act on opportunities for improvement in our approach, practices, processes, programs, policies, SOP’s, HR materials, etc. to ensure HR Operations is managed in the most relevant, efficient, and effective manner.
  • Collect, analyze statistical data, metrics, trends and reports. Ability to consolidate and present this information to senior leaders.
  • Assist the Vice President, HR with departmental budgeting, where requested.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable existing and proposed federal and provincial legislation, and awareness of regulatory restrictions applicable to our business operations in the controlled substances industry.
  • Partner with the HSE department to ensure all employees adhere to all HSE policies and practices and are appropriately supported during workplace incidents and medical leaves.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge of HR by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks and participating in professional associations. Encouraging the HRBP’s to do the same by setting a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience in retail and/or a manufacturing facility strongly desired, particularly in the liquor and/or cannabis industry.
  • Focused experience in Human Resources with 8-10+ years of HR experience, including 4-5+ years in a HR managerial or leadership role where you were responsible for leading an HR team of 5+ employees in multiple Canadian provinces.
  • Experienced in various functions of HR, with a strong focus in employee relations, performance management, and workplace investigations.
  • Have a strong understanding of relevant employment legislation and laws (in most Canadian Provinces – currently BC, AB, SK, MB, ON, and NB).
  • Strong business acumen and ability to understand business needs and strategy at a high-level, while also being skilled in HR Operations in order to mentor and coach your team on the specifics of best practice.
  • Experience in mergers and acquisitions an asset, as SNDL is continuing to grow!
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Human Resources or Business Administration is required.
  • CPHR designation strongly preferred.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office and HRIS systems (Workday).

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation, business travel is not frequent but may be necessary at times (up to 15%) in this role.
  • Must pass a basic security clearance.
