Our On-Call Crossing Guards are our best last-minute lifelines to ensure our designated intersections have a Crossing Guard. We hire one On-Call per area and they earn $30 per school day to be “on-call” and available. They may be called very last minute to work, sometimes only within 5-20 minutes before a shift is supposed to start; therefore, we hire candidates that live within the area that they would work in so that they are able to get to locations quickly. This also means that our On-Calls must have a reliable vehicle.

While On-Calls may not get called to work everyday, they MUST still have the ability to work if needed. They must ALWAYS be available during school bell times, roughly between 7:30-9:30 am & 2:00-4:20 pm – Monday to Friday.

Additionally, On-Calls receive earnings for any shifts actually worked on top of the daily $30 “stipend” to be on-call. There are different rates of pay depending on what type of shift you are being asked to work, however majority of the shifts are 40-60 minutes long and earn $17 each.

Here are the specific job duties:

· Direct or escort pedestrians across the street, stopping traffic as necessary.

· Communicate traffic, crossing rules, and other information to students and adults.

· Report unsafe student behaviour to school officials.

· Inspect your intersection on a daily basis and report any unsafe conditions.

· Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which pedestrians can cross.

· Be aware of emergency vehicles approaching the area ad ensure that they have priority over vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

· Record license plates of dangerous motorists and report to appropriate officials.

Crossing Guards are the leaders and first line of defence at the crossing locations.

Here's what we need from you:

· Recent Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check (Should you not have a valid Police Records Check, this must be completed before working as a Crossing Guard. The OSC reimburses the cost)

· Effective communication skills in English

· Ability to interact and cooperate with people of diverse ages and backgrounds

· Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to a work schedule

· Ability to walk briskly, move repeatedly in and out of the intersection, and stand for up to 1.5 hrs

· Ability to hold a 5-lb Stop Paddle above shoulder height for extended periods of time

· 20/20 Vision (with or without corrective lenses) along with adequate depth and peripheral perception

· Ability to dress appropriately for, and perform moderate physical labour under adverse weather conditions
