Reporting to the Senior Manager, Infrastructure Planning, the Mechanical Engineer plays an integral role as a member and representative of the Facilities & Services (F&S) team within the Infrastructure Planning & Implementation department, to support University Planning, Design & Construction (UPDC) in the planning and delivery of utilities infrastructure relating to capital projects.


The University of Toronto, St. George Campus has over 150 active concurrent and on-going capital projects at any given time, in the planning, design, and construction phases. Project values range from $100,000 up to hundreds of millions of dollars. As part of the Infrastructure Planning and Implementation team, the Mechanical Engineer will provide enhanced hands-on service to ensure that the current and future projects are delivered in a timely manner, within budget, meeting or exceeding the university standard for quality.


The Mechanical Engineer will provide specialized mechanical engineering services for all capital projects throughout the project delivery cycle - from initial design to building hand over. In the pre-design phase of each project, the incumbent will provide feedback and guidance to external consultants with respect to the content in the technical investigations of existing buildings on campus. The Mechanical Engineer will analyze the technical investigations and ensure completeness such that, it can inform the scope and costing of related projects. The incumbent will work closely and collaboratively with the Building Area Managers and other stakeholders within the Facilities and Services department to support the delivery of technical investigations.


During the design phase, the Mechanical Engineer will review design documentation to ensure adherence to the University’s design standards. The incumbent will work closely and collaboratively with UPDC and F&S to ensure the timely delivery of capital projects. This will include a quality review of the milestone deliverables to ensure that the necessary information has been provided and to provide feedback to the Design Teams so that they meet their deliverables within the allotted design schedule for each milestone. The Mechanical Engineer will provide technical expertise to identify issues with the mechanical design that does not meet the University standard and provide feedback and guidance to ensure completeness of the deliverable at each design milestone.


During the commissioning phase, the Engineer will engage with the commissioning agents and provide oversight to ensure the deliverables meet the University design standards and to review the on-site product is in accordance with shop drawings. When required, the Mechanical Engineer will witness factory acceptance tests for critical equipment.


In addition, the Mechanical Engineer will manage and archive design documentation to improve efficiency within F&S. The Mechanical Engineer will manage building system information (such as update Master Drawings) to allow for easy retrieval and data consistency for ongoing and future projects. It will empower F&S Operations to provide timely technical guidance on building systems during planning, design, and construction stages of project delivery. The Mechanical Engineer will review as-built drawings to ensure that a complete set has been provided and appropriately archived for future stakeholders.


Professional services include all aspects of mechanical engineering as defined by the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) such as reviewing design, specifications and drawings on new build and renovation capital projects to ensure compliance with the University’s design standards. They will provide technical expertise to UPDC Project Management and Design & Engineering, and external contractors with respect to the mechanical services required to support projects.


Qualifications:


EDUCATION:


University degree in Mechanical Engineering. Registered Professional Engineer (PEng), in good standing with a license to practice in the Province of Ontario required.


EXPERIENCE:


Minimum 8 years in Mechanical Engineering with demonstrated experience working in the built environment. Experience with diverse large projects including academic, laboratory, and commercial clients an asset. Solid understanding of the project delivery lifecycle.


TECHNICAL SKILLS:


Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Bluebeam. Basic knowledge of AutoCAD with the ability to update drawings. Sound knowledge of REVIT and BIM. Thorough understanding of HVAC, heating and cooling, plumbing, and fire protection systems. Sound knowledge of the Mechanical Design Standard and Building Automation Standard.
