The Office of Research, Agri-Food Partnership has primary responsibility for the management of the Agreement between the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) and the University of Guelph (UofG). Within the Agreement, the Research Program includes the Tier 1 and Tier 2 Research Programs, the Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) Scholarship Program, the Undergraduate Student Experiential Learning (USEL) Program, the Gryphon’s LAAIR (Leading to the Accelerated Adoption of Innovative Research) Program, and the Knowledge Translation and Transfer (KTT) Program.
Reporting to the Senior Manager, OMAFRA-UofG Research Programs, the position of Manager, Research Programs leads the day-to-day management and administration of the Research Program-related contractual obligations of the OMAFRA-UofG Agreement. The primary responsibilities for the role include executing research calls, proposal review, and proposal awarding processes; managing the report and amendment review process, including providing a formal decision on submitted reports and amendments; and managing the team of staff delivering Agreement-funded Research Programs. Additional tasks include supporting the administration of awarded projects and utilizing research information and preparing analyses to support reporting requirements and guide process improvement. The Manager, Research Programs also assists in research program policy development, including related to the Research Management System.
Requirements of the position include:
- Undergraduate degree in a related field (master’s degree preferred) and at least three (3) years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Understanding of Ontario’s agricultural and rural sectors
- Strong research administration background with an excellent understanding of the research process, principles, approach, procedures, and best practices
- Understanding of compliance and ethics as it applies to research programs
- Demonstrated ability to work in challenging situations where consensus must be achieved among stakeholders with broad and complex needs
- Attention to detail, exceptional time management and organizational abilities
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, and experience managing multiple tasks at the same time
- Solid computing skills, including the use of databases (experience using SmartSimple’s Research Management System would be an asset)
- Financial knowledge of the research process
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Experience supervising staff
- Experience with the University of Guelph’s policies and procedures and knowledge of the OMAFRA-UofG Agreement would be considered assets
