Position Overview

The McCaig Bone and Joint Health Institution in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Junior Biomechanics Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Manager, Business and Operations.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Assist for implementing policy or procedural changes based on his/her on-the-job experience
  • Responsible for completion of assigned projects on schedule
  • Ensure that the quality of data collected is at the highest standard
  • Accountable for maintaining Good Laboratory Practices in all work carried out in the institute
  • Accountable for transference of information to trainees within the institute
  • Assist with the imparting and enforcing laboratory safety protocols, in compliance with University of Calgary health and safety regulations
  • Possess basic knowledge on biomechanical testing, staying abreast of current industry standards and trends
  • Support McCaig Institute members in performing biomechanical testing
  • Maintain a hazard free working environment

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical area, a Technical Diploma or equivalent from an established Technical Institute
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in testing of biomaterials and/or biomedical devices
  • Basic knowledge of biomechanical testing industry standards and trends
  • Ability to perform design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Experience in or willingness to learn the maintenance of core laboratory infrastructure
  • Experience in developing project schedules and managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Basic knowledge of theory and practical application of related technical procedures
  • Good knowledge of electronic and mechanical equipment commonly used for experimentation and data acquisition
  • Experience with Labview or similar data acquisition software is considered an asset
  • Certification or knowledge in government safety regulated initiatives such as WHMIS is considered an asset. Knowledge in testing standards such as CSA and ASTM are also considered an asset
